Liveblogging the Practical Aspects of a i-MiEV

Hi! I m Charis, and I write cars (among other  important things ). For one week, I have a Mitsubishi parked in front of my apartment, of Mitsubishi, and I get to play. You get to come for the ride.  Further updates appear on this page as I do to and with the car.

Some about the i-MiEV: It s from which means it s super According to the official page. it 112 MPGe (really, though, kind of makes no sense to me, but we re going to go with it), is of zero emission, and has a range of 62 per charge. According to the very gentleman who dropped it off, the in the back will handle a 1 charge (120 V AC, 16 A; 22 for a full charge) or a level 2 (208-240 V AC, 12 A 80 A; 7 per charge).

There s a level 3 (or a quick charger) on the other of the car, but apparently this one isn t set up for it. That gets you to 80% of a full in 30 minutes starting from no at all.

Day One 12:05pm

At this point, the car has in my parking space for half an It s adorable. It s super cute. It is possibly the cutest thing I ever seen. It is possible I am not entirely objective about specific electric car (or electric in general, but come on, guys, emissions, how is that not awesome).

It comes with a nifty remote control which heat/cool the battery in extreme conditions (-10/100+ degrees which improves battery It s also super easy to inside my large bag full of of stuff, so that s another

Car, my seatbelt is not fastened I am not going anywhere. Stop the warning light already.

driving it around the corner to it, it handles like a car. I everyone says that. But it s it handles like a car.  I been specifically told not to it in with an extension cord, but the OEM doesn t actually reach my

So the first trip is to get an extension because I don t actually own one (and milk, because I m out of that and it s right next door

The steering is tight and the car does not . which I love. I do not like my floaty or twitchy (this is why I do not get with a Lancia anything), and is perfect.

The inside of the car is a little bit (the door handle, for and it s really reminiscent of a kei car (I used to own a kei car and am familiar with the stereotype). I can see how might not appeal to an American but it s perfectly functional, and like I I think it s cute.

Day One 12:15pm

To the car on, you just turn the key and wait for the green READY light to on ; that s the only way you know it s on, it s electric, it doesn t make any Shifting is exactly like an put your foot on the brake and the lever. I love this, I love automatics and really that all manual cars I am expected to drive will in a fiery pit. (Hey, if you to drive a manual, DO IT, just it away from me.)

There are three modes in the i-MiEV goes forward D, and B . I m in Eco mode, which I m told it the most range it can get (except for B, is for stop-and-go traffic, and the B is for Regenerative or harvesting the energy from the to put back into the battery, by the way, super awesome). So I m in eco and it is super super slow off the

Every display in the car is some of touchscreen or electric ; this is cool now, and hopefully it not wear down horribly the years. This is not, a problem specific to electric everything I saw at the last three shows I went to had touchscreens all and those don t last as long as do. On the plus side, there is a cute little display in the that cycles through a of different displays up to and including how range you have left .

else odd in an ICE car, I do a lot of coasting up to lights and stop signs to my gas mileage. If I try this in the i-MiEV, it momentum immediately and I have to hit the again. This is not a bad thing, a different thing.

Day One 12:18pm

I ve gone all of two miles in and it is super super quiet, it s it s wonderful. Every other car on the is super loud and horrible and I them all.

Day One 12:43pm

drive mode is much responsive than Eco mode. s a little bit of get-up-and-go to it, and it doesn t to have killed the range off in the two between my apartment and the hardware It s really smooth on the road, as

When shifting into the camera mounted in the rear of the car its feed onto the center . This is incredibly helpful for not things that may have behind your car while you t looking, less so for actually into a parking place.

Oh! The I don t actually listen to the radio I drive, but I turned it on to see how it was. (We get radio stations around is how it was, but that s not Mitsubishi s It sounds great some of I m sure, is due to the fact that the is not competing with the engine for how noise it can drill into skull.

Day One 2:58pm

So the Mitsubishi i-MiEV is pretty easy to charge, it out . I m driving to my sister s this and she lives 28 miles away, in the of the city. So I went to plug in the car and hit my snag.  I have a 12-gauge cord, so I plug in the car, I the OEM cord into the extension and I plug the extension cord the outlet.

Then I look at the There are supposed to be three lights; red means there s a with the outlet, orange the car is charging, and blue means the car is charging.

At this point, the is sitting on the sidewalk in front of my it s hot out, and none of the blinky are going at all. I unplugged backed the car into the parking and plugged things back in (so the charger is now sitting on a rock in of the apartment instead of on the sidewalk). nothing.

I told you it was on a rock.

That was I figured out I had to flip a switch to turn the outlet on. The charger started blinking its little dance of o hai ur car is charged. Success.

If you re I have thirty seconds of video of the cord. And the car. here .

PS   the car will not even on while it is plugged into the . That seems like a safety feature.

Further As Things Happen.

Also, I both requests for experiments the i-MiEV (within reason, and will also happily any questions (car-related, okay) tell me in the comments below!
