Mitsubishi Electric Car: i as in

The new Mitsubishi electric car has a slightly name, but otherwise it’s loveable! It started out as the iMiev, when it had wheel motors a few ago as a concept vehicle.

. but Mitsubishi has shortened the name to i.

I caught up Steven Lough (president of Electric Auto Association), got one of the first Mitsubishi i’s so I could ask him how he likes driving the new i has driven a LOT of different electric over the years!) and to ask what been doing with his little Mitsubishi electric Answer? Well.

Driving it on the Taking NPR for a ride-along. also on the Charging it at level 2 charging (although it’s level 3 and Passing SUV’s on the highway.

Come on — ride and listen in on the conversation!

Interview Steven Lough on the Mitsubishi i Car

Lynne: Hi, Steven! I know new Mitsubishi i isn’t your EV. What other electric have you driven?

Steven: there is hardly an electric car out I have not driven.

Tesla Roadster; Ford Electric; Nissan LEAF; electric ( not available in Washington yet. but soon); VIA Motors GM full size Pick-up; ForTwo Electric; AC Propulsion’s E-Box electric conversion V2G; Wheego Whip It, a neighborhood electric vehicle Dynasty Motors in Canada; another neighborhood electric and half dozen or more conversions, scooters, and electric cycles.

Did he fall for her looks, or her

Having tried all the current EV what made you decide on the electric car? A new car represents a commitment .

It was $34,000 minus the we will get back on our 2012 taxes — and of course, in State there’s no sales

So the Mitsubishi electric car cost than the others, that’s why you it?

Well, I could have a LEAF, or even a CODA, have larger batteries, and a bit ZOOM, but really, I just for the quirky look of the Mitsubishi i.

How the Mitsubishi I compare with the Whip LiFe and the Smart Electric in terms of handling and

The Wheego Whip LiFe is a small company which may or may not it in the long run. Mitsubishi be around for a long long

And the Smart ForTwo? It was just too We love taking other with us. The I (as I like to call it) holds four adults.

I was comparing the Mitsubishi electric car a Corolla, size-wise, that a little smaller.

I would say it is to the Honda FIT in size and look, not the sedan.

Have they the headroom/legroom well, so that comfortable for average sized Your drive-along partner KUOW didn’t mention it, so guessing it’s fine. Is a car that a linebacker is going to be in?

A linebacker? Well, I would not go far! But yes, the headroom is I am 6’2.

Fast charging and charging.

Have you got the level 3 package on your Mitsubishi car, or did you skip that

Yes it is an $900. option on the Standard i and on the top-o-the-line which I went

Do you ever use public charging If so, how often compared to home (I noticed in the KUOW interview you you mostly use the 110v.)

Yes, in the last 4 months — the Level 2 type charger. of my friends have used the 3 and went from Seattle all the way to (Washington) over Stevens on HW-9.

Is Puyallup the furthest driven it? That’s like 30 or so, isn’t it, and you charged up a bit when you there? It doesn’t sound the range is badly affected by on the freeway, as you described it.

From our in NE Seattle it was 40 miles out there, and 40 back. I did charge for a while to give me the edge to come without skimping on the freeway Booked along at 65 and 70 just

You are correct, though; if you were to BEST the factory rating of 60+ a modest 55 mph would probably do it.

I figure that at boulevard (35-40 mph) I could 70 miles out of one charge. And remember, no one you can’t get a little partial here, and a partial charge and before you know it, you have over a 100 miles in one day.

a very good point, a lot of don’t realize that. 15 of opportunity charging can put a lot of miles into the tank.

Do you use the AC, the heater, the without worrying about how it the range?

Mitsubishi Electric Cars

Sure. The Mitsubishi car even comes with a key fob which you can turn on the heater or the air from inside the house, the car is still plugged in to the AC power.

I bought a 220v (fast unit, but so far, I am just the simple 110v charger comes with ALL the EV’s out now, free of charge.

charger, though.

Yes, the is slow, but think of this Lets say you are a very busy and you are out driving ’round somewhere 3 a day. That’s a LOT of miles!

Well, the car is sitting in your 21 hours a day then. Right?

So even on a slow trickle 110 plug, when you get up in the morning FULL.

Passing SUV’s and filling up for $1.44.

How does it hills?

On our trip out of town to Canal for the 4th, there is a fairly steep hill out of Bremerton towards Belfair. A guy in a new SUV was of curious about the car (I have a on the back that says, All ) So at something OVER 70 mph, he finally gave it up and fell

From our house to my cousin’s house on the Hood Canal was over 30 miles one way. could have done the trip, but we brought along our 110v plug and filled UP, on dime.

Now the battery pack in the electric car (16 kwh) is smaller the LEAF’s (24 kwh). That is why the car less. At 9 cents a kilowatt it costs $1.44 to fill up.

for about 60 miles.

The $100,000 Tesla Roadster is 54 kwh, and that is good for 220 miles. Ain’t the efficiency of cars GREAT?

Yes it is. Well, takes care of my questions. Any thoughts before we wrap it up?

what folks after a week of ownership come to And I cannot say it any better than my friend Ed Begley Jr. said in the Who Killed the Electric Car:

the detractors and critics of electric have been saying for is TRUE. The electric vehicle is not for Given the limited range, it can meet the needs of NINETY of the population.

That’s right! And you, Mr. President; )
