While it may still be relatively new here, the i-MiEV is actually nearly four years old as it was launched in Japan back in July 2009. Since then, Mitsubishi has produced about 33,000 units of this zero-emissions vehicle, forming alliances with more than 107 local partners in public and private sectors around the world in joint testing and educational activities about EVs required infrastructure.

Locally, the first i-MiEV unit was registered in October of 2011 with the Mitsubishi EV Eco-tourism Pilot Demonstration Program, in partnership with Four Seasons Resort in Langkawi, launched soon after that. Last year, it also started an e-Heroes mission, in partnership with Petrosains, to offer electric car fun rides for children to promote awareness about an eco-friendlier future. So far (as it claims), over 30,000 kids have benefited from that.

“In line with the Malaysian government s call to reduce carbon emission by 40 per cent by the year 2020, Mitsubishi Motors is happy to offer the Malaysian public a chance to purchase their very own EV and make a choice towards a greener future. Mitsubishi s i-MiEV is known for many accomplishments in the electric car world,” said MMM Chief Executive Officer Tetsuya Oda during his opening speech at the launching event.

The i-MiEV uses a 330V lithium-ion battery pack that powers a permanent magnet electric motor producing a maximum output of about 67 hp (to be exact, it s better measured at 49 kW) with 180 Nm of instant torque. Its top speed is said to be about 130 km/h and, if fully charged, can travel up to 150 km, which is good enough for a day to day city lifestyle usage.

If charged at home using a 230 volts, it takes 8 hours (about RM3.50 in the current electric tariff) to fully ward the system but Mitsubishi said that that at its stations, a 30 minute charge can garner about 80 percent of the battery, roughly giving about 100 km of travel. Apart from the SAG Star Mitsubishi 3S centre, there s two other public charging station, one in KLCC and the other in Lot 10, that this vehicle can dock at, for free. It also has plans  for 5 more stations elsewhere with investments of about RM1 million to build them.

There is a small nominal roadtax of RM10 per year to add to the cost.

It also comes standard with 2-DIN Touch Screen Entertainment System with GPS Navigation, Solar tint film, Auto Climate Control Air Conditioner, Double LED Head Lamp, LED Rear Combination Lamp, Auto Light Control, Electric Power Steering, Aero Wiper Blade, Leather wrap steering wheel and shift knob as well as a Charging Cable with Control Box.

It also comes with a free 5-Year maintenance package and 5-Year warranty (or 100,000 km) package which covers labour cost for periodical vehicle check, air conditioner filter and brake fluid.
