Mitsubishi Outlander First Drive

Mitsubishi s Outlander has achieved success around the globe with an equal match of style and substance. The new model isn t a case of reinventing the wheel. Rather, it s a subtle improvement on the outgoing version.

The Australian market is extremely important for Outlander. 45,000 units have already been sold in Australia and New Zealand combined since its initial launch. Mitsubishi realised that to further capitalise on this ever burgeoning sector of the market, they needed to improve key areas like interior quality, NVH and operation of the third row seats – which is exactly what they have done.

The Basics

The underlying concepts of this 2013 redesign were to retain the strong points and positives of the old model, while improving upon a set list of certain features that engineers knew were letting the vehicle down. Mitsubishi was also keen to focus serious energy – pardon the pun – on stronger environmental credentials.  Ask Mitsubishi honchos what their development motto was for the Outlander and they ll regale you with a tale of an ‘environmentally friendly, next generation SUV .

As such, the Outlander has lost some weight (approximately 100kg), receives an improved emissions rating (class leading), and is more efficient than the outgoing model in terms of fuel usage. Active and passive safety technology has been improved, recognition that even in this competitive sector, customers are looking for both quality and value for money.

First Impressions

The design is the first feature that captures the eye. As you approach the new Outlander there is little doubt that it is in fact, a new Outlander. The light design both front and rear especially is much more current and futuristic. Overall, we like the new style.

Mitsubishi is keen to point out that the new styling is also more functional than the old model, with the focus on aero efficiency paying off nicely when it comes to slipping through the air efficiently.

Inside, the concentration on interior fit and finish is immediately obvious as well. There s a much more significant feeling of quality than the old model, it s quieter, more insulated and comfortable too. An added bonus is that the interior looks more functional too.

Under the bonnet, two new petrol engines and a new, efficient diesel headline the changes. The 2WD model gets a 2-litre engine for the first time and there s even a plug in hybrid coming later in 2013. Opt for petrol 2WD and you can choose between a manual and CVT ‘box, the diesel engine comes with a conventional auto.

Impressively, the diesel can also haul a 2-tonne load. Clever technology such as an ECO driving mode is in play too. Select that mode and the accelerator pedal actuation is revised, the AC compressor running is revised and the engine idling is restricted, all in an attempt to keep fuel consumption right down.

Safety hasn t been overlooked either with a full suite of technology on offer including adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, and a 5-star ANCAP rating. In a driving sense, the most noticeable improvement is in the operation of the CVT, which feels more natural than it ever has, and in the areas of NVH. The Outlander cabin is quieter and more refined than ever before.

What do we think?

Across the range, from ES, through LS and up to Aspire models, the new Outlander is cheaper than the outgoing model. Pricing starts at under 30 grand and rounds at just under 51 grand for the top spec model. The Outlander has always delivered value.

Now it delivers quality and refinement to match.
