Mitsuibishi Outlander

The Mitsubishi Outlander is a four wheel drive SUV with the added advantage of seven seats, the Japanese manufacturer has an excellent reputation for making four wheel drive cars and if you want the assurance of a family mover that is the best in class off road or as a tow car (up to 2000kg braked) then the Outlander is the car for you.  There is plenty of room for tall passengers in the front while the second row has less headroom and the third row seats are suitable only for children and folding the rearmost seats is more fiddly than it should be. The Outlander is very comfortable if a little uninspiring on the road and while there is plenty of interior storage and the controls are well laid out the general feeling is that the quality of materials used is not class leading, but this is a car that can pull a caravan through a muddy field fully loaded so one can forgive a few hard plastics.

The Outlander has a three 4WD options, ECO, where the car is driven only by the front wheels to increase the fuel consumption (unless it senses that more traction is required and adds drive to the rear), 4WD Auto, which controls the distribution of power to all four wheels, as well as enhancing stability whilst towing and 4WD Lock to cope with more challenging off-road terrain such as mud, sand or wet grass as it automatically increases the amount of torque sent to the rear wheels to ensure maximum traction.

While there are five versions of the Outlander only the GX2 and GX3 (option to have leather seats at £200) make it on to the Scheme and only the GX3 offers seating for seven, while you do miss out on some of the toys from the top two models the GX3 still boasts 18 alloy wheels, privacy glass, black roof rails, electric heated folding door mirrors with side indicators, leather steering wheel and gearshift knob, front fog lamps, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth hands-free kit, multi-colour LCD info display, windscreen wiper rain sensor and cruise control.

The Mitsubishi Outlander is only available with a six speed manual gearbox paired to a 2.2 litre diesel engine producing 147 brake horse power that can propel the big Mitsubishi to 62 miles per hour in 10.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 124 miles per hour which is very impressive, economy is nothing short of fantastic for a car this size with four wheel drive with a claimed economy of 52.3 miles per gallon.  The Outlander is the only 4wd on the Scheme capable of carrying seven and given the realistic Advance Payments offers a excellent option for rural dwellers with large families.
