Nissan revealed a hybrid-powered variant of the seven-passenger Pathfinder at the New York auto show on Wednesday.

Nissan estimates fuel economy at 25 city/27 highway mpg, up from the standard two-wheel drive Pathfinder’s 20 city/26 highway mpg. The fuel economy boost — and the Pathfinder’s 19.5-gallon fuel tank — result in a 526-mile range.

The Pathfinder hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter supercharged four-cylinder gasoline engine rated at 230 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque, and a 15 kW electric motor rated at 20 hp and 29 lb-ft of torque, for a total of 250 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. The pair is mated to Nissan’s Xtronic continuously variable transmission. The Pathfinder makes use of regenerative braking.

The hybrid system uses Nissan’s Intelligent Dual Clutch System to manage power from the electric motor and gas engine. It is positioned between the engine and CVT where the torque converter would normally be, and also functions as a generator.

When properly equipped, the Pathfinder Hybrid can tow 3,500 pounds, down from the standard Pathfinder’s 5,000 pounds.

The 2014 Pathfinder hybrid doesn’t see significant changes from the fourth-generation 2013 Nissan Pathfinder that debuted last year. Hybrid design cues include LED taillights and Nissan Puredrive hybrid badges. Inside, a hybrid system information screen is added to the instrument panel.

The 4.2-inch color monitor is customizable and capable of displaying power output readings from the electric motor and gas engine, and regenerated energy.

The car’s battery pack is stored under the third row seat and doesn’t impact second- or third-row legroom or cargo space. The Pathfinder hybrid still offers a second row tip-up seat that allows access to the third row while a child safety seat is installed.

The 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid is available in two-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations, and three trim levels: SV, SL and Platinum.

The Pathfinder hybrid reaches showrooms in late summer and is expected to be priced around $3,000 more than the Pathfinder 3.5-liter V6 models. The 2013 Pathfinder SV with front-wheel drive has a sticker price of $32,755 including shipping charges.

Available features include leather seating, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, push-button start, Bluetooth, Bose premium audio system, tri-zone automatic climate control, rear view monitor, remote engine start, tri-zone entertainment system, dual panorama moonroof and SiriusXM radio.
