All new 2014 Nissan Qashqai makes its global debut; Nissan India is interested!

The 2014 Nissan Qashqai, the second generation of the highly successful crossover, has been unveiled during a 3D social media digital mapping show in London. Launched in 2007, the first generation model has been a success with over 2 million units produced till date.

The all new Qashqai sports Nissan s current SUV design language which was highlighted by the new Nissan X-Trail is basically a short wheel base version of the new X-Trail. While its predecessor was available in both 5- and 7-seat (Qashqai+2) versions, the new gen crossover will be available only in 5-seat configuration, letting the X-Trail take care of the 7-set segment.

Based on Renault-Nissan Alliance s Common Module Family Architecture, the 2014 Qashqai is 49mm longer than the model it replaces and is also lower and wider. Nissan has managed to reduce the weight by as much as 40kg despite the addition of new additional equipment.

Speaking of the equipment, the new Qashqai comes packed with goodies like full LED headlamps, Around View Monitor, Nissan Connect multimedia infotainment system with smartphone integration app, Intelligent Parking Assist, Hill Start Assist, Chassis Control and Nissan Safety Shield Package which contains Front Collision Avoidance, Driver Attention Support, Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Moving Object Detection, and High Beam Assist.

The car offers a choice of four engines two petrol and two diesel. Both front wheel drive and 4 4-i variants are on offer. The powertrain details are as below.

The 1.2-litre DIG-T turbocharged petrol engine puts out a respectable 115PS and 190 Nm of torque. Mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, the punitive motor delivers a claimed fuel economy of 50.4 mpg (17.7 kpl) while emitting 129 g/km of CO2.

The turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine is good enough for 150PS and 240 Nm of torque. The front wheel drive manual version returns 17.7 kpl and emits 132 g/km of CO2.

The familiar 1.5-litre dCi (K9k) is available in its 110PS avatar. Nissan claims that an extensive re-engineering of the engine has resulted in more smoothness and an additional 20 Nm of torque. The oil burner sets the standard in fuel economy and emission with figures of 74.3 mpg (26.18 kpl) and 99 g/km of CO2 respectively.

The 1.6-litre dCi diesel engine pumps out 130PS and is available with both manual and X-CVT gearboxes. The front wheel drive manual variant manages 64.2 mpg/115 g/km of CO2, the X-CVT variant manages 61.4 mpg/119 g/km and the four-wheel-drive manual version enjoys figures of 129g/km and 57.6mpg.

Nissan India is reportedly studying our market for the Qashqai and the new X-Trail. If launched, the former will be positioned above the Terrano and will go head on with the Mahindra XUV500.
