NISSAN Leaf – Electric Car Visia 80kW Auto

Matt Campbell

The car: Leaf

The price: From plus on-road costs

statistics: Electric motor; single-speed automatic transmission; 160 range; FWD

The tester: Matt

Why we’re driving it: The Nissan plug-in electric car has been on for a few months now, but Drive had its first chance to spend a amount of time living the car.

Likes: Electric offers instantaneous torque power) which allows you to get out of quickly if you need to. Drives well, with compliant, suspension and reasonably precise Good equipment levels reversing camera, satnav, phone connectivity, USB input and wheels.

High-tech but functional interior is and roomy. Silent motoring is there s something nice being able to hear passengers clearly.

Dislikes: It s silent, which means may not hear you coming. Range is at 160 kilometres you d need to be a professional to achieve that.

Really useful for city commuting, so I d a second car to go and visit relatives.

Only gets a three-year for the car and its batteries while competitor and electric cars get up to eight Resale is a big unknown.

Would I buy

No. I genuinely like the Leaf, but I like going for long drives — so I d consider the released Holden Volt hybrid over the electric-only The Volt may be more expensive, but it you 87km of electric motoring and its engine means you can go further if you to.

It’s less than the Volt and theoretically and has a claimed range on electricity however it’s still too and doesn’t travel far enough on one Maybe extending the range by 150km with a sticker of $40,000 would entice interest?

There is one major flaw

You would need a second car for away from the charger

system for about 50 grand be a better option i think it get cheaper in the long run it’s a option and removes the EV compromise

You can buy a standalone portable generator for $1500 although I do concede you can’t use that whilst the is operating. As many households two cars or more I can envisage an car becoming an option for some, I think that the asking remains the biggest stumbling at the moment and as such the Honda and Hybrids are perhaps the best for short to medium trips in the or alternatively it’s hard to a modern direct injection turbo or diesel on the open The latest LPG Commodores and Falcons are the good options which well in all conditions.
