BladeGlider cuts through the air and expectations

Nissan claims that its new BladeGlider concept was developed with form following function, but you wouldn’t think so upon laying your eyes on this three-seater, as it looks downright wicked from every angle. Sometimes, functionally is nothing more than an afterthought.

While it may be hard to believe that a production vehicle will look like the BladeGlider, Nissan gives every indication that the concept will be put into production at some point in the not-so-distant-future, with a press release that includes the sentence: When BladeGlider matures into a production car, it could be Nissan’s first use of in-wheel motors.

Nissan says the motors would power the wheels at the back of the vehicle, making the BladeGlider rear-wheel drive. Combine that with a 30/70 front-to-rear weight distribution, lithium-ion battery modules that are mounted low and toward the rear of the vehicle, and front wheels that are placed close together, and you have yourself a highly-manoeuvrable electric car.

The BladeGlider also employs strong and stiff carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) to help minimize its overall weight.

As its name would suggest, the very idea of this concept was borne from the soaring, silent, panoramic freedom of a glider. Engineering was focused on aerodynamics, and sure enough, the BladeGlider boasts low drag while generating road-hugging downforce.

Nissan is no stranger to the world of EVs, and it says the BladeGlider shares engineering values with both the Leaf and ZEOD RC sports car. Ben Bowlby, director of Nissan Motorsport Innovation, speaks about how the concept takes advantage of the figurative roads paved by the Leaf and ZEOD RC:

I think that the excitement of the racing car should be mirrored in the excitement of driving the road car, said Bowlby, who has supported the BladeGlider’s development. I think there are elements we can bring from the race track to make these future road cars more exciting, more fulfilling and give greater driving pleasure.

As track-ready as the BladeGlider sounds, it still offers seating for up to three people. A triangular setup inside sees two occupants sitting behind the single front seat, guaranteeing the driver ever-important control over the stereo. The driver’s seat slides sideways when opening a door, making rear seat ingress and egress easier.

The driver steers the car via an aircraft-type steering wheel, while Nissan describes the instrumentation inside the cockpit as state-of-the-art.

The vehicle has a roof that looks like it can be either removed or stowed. With the top off, both the driver and passengers get a near-360 degree view, similar to that of a glider, with the only difference being that Nissan’s concept can’t actually take to the skies.

The BladeGlider is the evolution of Nissan’s Zero Emissions Mobility program, and if Nissan is to be believed, it’s not a matter of if, but when it will be released as a production mode.
