2008 Nissan Altima

Hello Christine and Scott,

I was relieved to find your under About.com and find out I email you. A few weeks ago we a 2008 Nissan Altima and recently we noticed something has us worried: the ‘gasoline engine’ on a few seconds after starting the car and the car is still in PARK. It stays on EV for only the first few seconds. is not what we expected!

We thought research) that the high battery would have control at startup, low speeds, and not moving (at a stop sign light). In other words, NO being used at these EV MODE the whole time! We observed:

1. After we shift to DRIVE, it happens again time the vehicle comes to a stop while at a stop or red light and we’re not moving for than a few seconds.

2. The engine stays on for at least a and then shuts off, EV resumes and all is quiet until I moving and accelerating.

3. This seems to happen when the is cold, in other words, it hasn’t been used for (e.g. first drive in the and keeps happening for about 1/2 or so during that first After 1/2 hour or so, this happening. In other words, the EV sign comes on and STAYS ON the time the car is stopped (idle) at a sign/red traffic light or the car is in PARK but still on.

This is we thought would ALWAYS

4. There is one exception to what I said in item 3 above. for the first time, while at a red and after the car went into EV the engine kicked on even I had just driven the car for at least one at high speeds on highway.

Is something wrong with my I noticed on your website you ‘own’ your own 2008 Hybrid. Please tell me happening with yours. At my husband thought that was due to the cold weather (under 40

But today, the temperature was at 48 degrees and it didn’t stay in EV MODE at Please help. I am afraid might be a defective car.

PS. Yesterday I drove the car to the dealer and the that sold us the car told us he has seen it happen before and ‘it is normal’. He even had me another hybrid (2007) had not been sold yet and sure seconds after the car started, the EV signal disappeared and the engine EVEN THOUGH I was still in mode. I don’t know to believe him or not.

I also don’t find any on manual to either identify behavior as normal or not normal.

Thanks for writing — questions. We understand your No worries it sounds as if your Altima Hybrid is working normally.

Your husband is — it does have a lot to do the cold temperatures, and there are several conditions that make the engine on your car regardless of your input. are:

State of battery

Nissan Cima Electric Cars

Temperature of the engine and hybrid

Ambient air temperature

When you the car, it will usually the engine after just a few even if it’s been a few hours since you’ve driven it. The computer does automatically to warm the engine, battery and associated hybrid Under mild weather the engine should shut off just a few minutes, but when it s out, it could take longer it also depends the amount of charge left in the battery. If it s on the low side, the engine may running to charge the battery up to capacity.

Also, and this is especially in the winter (and if you are using the and/or the defroster a lot), the will run longer. The engine has to run to the cabin and the higher you have the set (and the longer it s on), the the engine will run. If you electrically heated seats, those can help minimize the to heat the cabin air as much, minimizing the engine running also. Even if you are stopped for a or more at a traffic light and the car is in EV if any of these conditions come up battery, car needing heat), the will start.

Again, all of this is normal.

You ll as we get into spring and early (and you won t be needing the heat/defroster as everything will come up to temperature quicker and the Altima will stay in EV mode longer. In the summertime when it really hot and you re using the AC a lot, you notice that it runs the more. The AC compressor runs off so you may find the engine kicks on often to keep the battery

Just bear in mind this is a hybrid electric car and is upon the gasoline engine to the entire system up and running. though you can drive in electric it s still more of an assistant a main power source. Altima uses Toyota s Drive System in our opinion, it is the one available.

As you get used to this car, we bet you ll not be able to maximize the EV mode (and fuel economy), but to love it as well.

Thanks for our site and writing please free to let us know if you have any questions.

Best regards, Scott
