Nissan’s New Electric Car: The Zero-Emission All-Electric Nissan LEAF

Although the upcoming Nissan LEAF will be on the roads in some states beginning this year, mass production will not begin until 2012. The LEAF will be unlike any other gasoline or hybrid vehicle of available anywhere. It will have no fuel tank. It will have no tailpipe. It is a 100% electric zero-emissions vehicle from the EV pioneers at Nissan.

By conveniently plugging in your LEAF at home, you will be able to charge it fully in about 6 hours on a 220v home charging unit. A single charge cost only about $3.00 and will power the LEAF for up to 100 miles of comfortable travel. Additionally, you can charge the Leaf up to about 80% of capacity on a quick-charging commercial unit in just about 26 minutes.

It’s amazing to really consider never having to stop at a gas station again!

The new LEAF from Nissan is able to be programmed to begin charging during non-peak times, mostly in the middle of the night. This allows owners to take advantage of the best electricity rates. A single charge will cost only about $3.00.

Further, owners can use their smart phones to program the LEAF and even receive a message when charging is 100% complete. Nissan engineers have been pioneering zero-emission lithium-ion battery technologies for more than 17 years now. Beginning with the Altra EV in 1997, the company has consistently set new standards and created new EV technologies.

The new lithium-ion battery system for the LEAF by Nissan weighs only about 1/2 of the system used in the Altra. It also delivers twice the power. The LEAF delivers 100% torque off the line, even when fully loaded with features and accommodating five passengers.

It accelerates and handles like a V6 automobile and features a top speed rated at 90 miles per hour. The home charging system for the LEAF requires a 240v, 20 amp dedicated circuit on a separate breaker than the rest of your electric system. It needs to be hard-wired for optimal safety and performance.

The lithium ion battery pack itself is located under the seats and has been thoroughly tested for impact resistance.

There has been no set price established for the Nissan LEAF yet. However, the company states that it is targeting a price in the range of other typical family sedans. Nissan states that there are three necessary elements for the creation of a oil-independent future. They are:

Advanced battery system technologies;

A readily accessible charging network;

High quality cars that inspire customer loyalty;

Nissan is actively working with all levels of government and private corporations in order to grow a convenient and effective infrastructure of charging stations. Environmentally conscious readers are encouraged to support the growth of the entire EV movement. As Nissan states, they are being very proactive about developing a zero-emissions future for all people.
