Nissan Serena S-Hybrid Launched In Malaysia — RM149,500

Edaran Tan Chong Motor Sdn. Bhd. (ETCM) has launched the first hybrid MPV in the country the eight-seater, fully imported from Japan, RM149,500 (OTR) 2013 Nissan Serena S-Hybrid. The ‘S’ is short for ”Simple” and “Smart”.

The model is only offered in a single grade — the Highway Star grade, with black interior and a sports suspension, which Nissan says aids stability when driving on the highway while still offering a comfortable ride.

With its 1,997cc MR20DD petrol engine under the hood, the Serena S-Hybrid is eligible for import and excise duty exemption for hybrid vehicles below 2,000cc (which expires on 31-December 2013).

Performance: Making The Most Of Petrol And Hybrid Energy

The 2-litre engine produces 147 PS at 5,600rpm and 210Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. The direct injection Twin CVTC engine is paired with the familiar Nissan XTronic CVT with Adaptive Shift Control, delivering motion to the front wheels.

Although the Serena S-Hybrid carries the ‘Hybrid’ suffix in its nameplate, it works in a very different manner from a mild-hybrid model like a 2013 Honda Civic Hybrid or a full hybrid model like a 2013 Toyota Prius .

Compared to Honda and Toyota hybrid models, the Serena S-Hybrid sits in a different, simpler category of hybrid vehicles called micro-hybrids.

Instead of having a large, powerful but expensive electric motor that can propel the vehicle and recovers energy via regenerative braking (recovery of kinetic energy by running the traction motors as a generator), the Serena S-Hybrid uses a much simpler solution that is able replicate several key energy saving features of a mild and full hybrid model, but without the cost and weight penalty. It is actually quite an intelligent solution.

The Serena S-Hybrid uses what Nissan calls an Alternator Regenerative Control Technology. Compared to a standard Serena, the Serena S-Hybrid has a more powerful ECO (Energy Control Motor) motor that doubles as an alternator and an engine starter motor.

Economy: Just How Fuel-Efficient Is The New Serena S-Hybrid?

As the ECO motor resides outside the engine block and does not drive the wheels directly, it is unable propel the vehicle or provide regenerative braking capabilities. It does however keeps fuel consumption low by engaging the alternator function only when necessary, and shuts down the engine when idling, like a regular hybrid model.


It also makes up for the lack of full regenerative braking capability with an energy recuperation function which engages the alternator to charge a high-charging performance sub-battery that powers the vehicle’s accessories whenever the driver lifts his foot off the throttle pedal.

The ECO motor is also able to provide a small 50 Nm boost of torque for about one second when driving the vehicle away from standstill (after restarting the engine from idle stop). This makes sense as the most amount of energy is required when restarting the car and driving away from standstill.

All these simple but effective solutions accord the Serena S-Hybrid a fuel-economy of 15.2 km/litre (Japanese JC08 test cycle), the best-in-class in Japan.

The simple design also means that the Serena S-Hybrid does not require a large traction battery under the cabin. As such, the Serena S-Hybrid retains the full utility function of a regular MPV. In Japan, the Serena S-Hybrid is said to offer the best-in-class cabin space.

The omission of a traction battery should give some added confidence to first-time hybrid car buyers who are still doubtful about the reliability of traction batteries in hybrid vehicles.

The high-charging performance sub-battery is located within the engine bay. The frequent engine start-stop cycle also means that a regular lead acid 12V battery will not suffice. Instead, Nissan has fitted a special high-charging performance battery to complement the standard 12V battery.

The high-charging performance sub-battery is a deep cycle charging lead acid type. It comes with a three-year warranty and unlike a higher-end NiMh or Li-ion battery used in a regular hybrid car, this only costs less than RM1,000 to replace.

Features And Safety:

Standard features on the Serena S-Hybrid include keyless entry with Nissan’s Intelligent key, power operated sliding doors with one-touch automatic closing and anti-pinch (available on both left and right side), high intensity rear LED tail lamps, blue headlight inner lenses, 16-inch alloy wheels and halogen headlamps.

On the inside, the Serena S-Hybrid has a Multi-graphic meter, leather wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, fabric seats, 4-speaker audio system with MP3 and overhead air-conditioning vents for the second and third row seats.

Standard safety features include ABS with EBD and BA, VDC, hill start assist, dual front airbags, front seat belts with pre-tensioner and load limiter, 3x three-point seat belts for the second and third row seats, active front head restraints and ISOFIX child seat anchors in the second row.

Interior Design:

The Serena S-Hybrid s party trick is its highly customizable cabin. The three row seats can be arranged in up to 14 different configurations. The middle seat in the second row slides forward and back between the first and third row. It can either be pushed forward and backwards to create a centre aisle for occupants in the second row to access the third row seats behind or converted into a mini table for occupants in the first or third row.

There s also an aeroplane style flip-up tables behind the first row seats.

The second row seat on the left side of the vehicle can also be pushed forward or sideways (towards the vehicle s right side) to ease access to the third row. The right-side second row seat also flips up to reveal a hidden storage box, which is also where an emergency tyre repair kit is stored (like many cars on sale today, the Serena S-Hybrid doesn t come with a spare tyre).

The Serena S-Hybrid is covered by a 3-years or 100,000km (whichever comes first) warranty. There are four colour options — Dark Purple, Super Black, Brilliant Pearl White and Brilliant Silver.

Service interval is at 10,000 km/6-months, with the first three service interval at 1,000 km, 5,000 km and 10,000 km respectively.

Early buyers of the Serena S-Hybrid will receive a free 6.5-inch multimedia navigator with rear-view camera, DVD player, iPod connectivity, USB and Bluetooth worth RM3,300 (valid while stock last).

Optional accessories include a 10.1-inch roof-mounted LCD panel (RM700), door visor (RM400), combination leather seat and door panel trimming (RM2,800) and window tinting. The afore-mentioned 6.5-inch multimedia navigator is also in the list of optional accessories.

ETCM aims to sell about 350 units of the Serena S-Hybrid per month. Between now until end of 2013, the company targets to sell around 2,000 units of the 2013 Serena S-Hybrid. As to the question of whether will the price be revised after 31-December 2013, it is not something that ETCM can answer at the moment as it would depend on the government s decision to either extend or discontinue the current tax incentives for hybrid vehicles below 2,000cc.

The 2013 Nissan Serena S-Hybrid will not replace the existing C24-series locally-assembled 2013 Nissan Serena. which is targeted at commercial and fleet users.
