This compact crossover from Nissan is considered among the few pioneers in crossover SUV category. Although it was launched in 2001, its predecessor Nissan Rasheen was introduced in early 1970s. Like most crossovers of the time, Rasheen was a sedan car based crossover equipped with all time 4WD and a remarkably intelligent ATTESA power terrain module.

ATTESA power terrain distributed torque according to traction conditions that each wheel encounters, which made Rasheen and X-Trail superior crossovers compared to their contemporaries. However, similar terrain control systems were employed by other Japanese manufacturers in later years as well. X-Trail competed for market share with crossovers like Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Ford Escape.

Ever since its launch in 2001, Nissan X-Trail can be categorized into two generations. First generation (2001-2007) X-Trail was based on Nissan FF-S platform. It was offered in 2.0 and 2.5 litre petrol engines and a 2.2 litre turbo charged diesel engine. A special 2.0 litre turbo charged engine was also introduced only in Japanese market which was capable of producing 280 hp, it was labeled as X-Trail GT Turbo.

Options for choosing either a 4 speed auto or 5,6 speed manual gearbox were also offered.

Second generation (2008 till present) is built on Nissan C instead of FF-S platform and is offered in 2.0, 2.5 litre petrol and 2.0 litre diesel engine capacities. Unlike first generation X-Trails, Nissan launched second generation with choice of either having a 6 speed manual or a 6 speed auto gearbox. By 2010 X-Trail is replaced by another crossover from Nissan, Rogue, which will cater only to market in US and Canada.

Current models of Nissan X-Trail employ a similar but more sophisticated version of ATTESA power terrain, now labeled as All Mode 4by4 I System, which analyzes terrain conditions through several sensors and controls to adjust traction instantaneously. Though this terrain control technology doesnt seem dramatic now, back in 1970s it was no less than a technological breakthrough.

Some of the engine codes of Nissan X-Trail engines along with their brief specifications are as under. MR20 Engine; this 16 valve 2.0 litre petrol engine was produced from 2008 till 2011. QR20 DE Engine; it was another 2.0 litre16 valve petrol engine produced by Nissan from the year 2000 till 2008.

QR20 DE Engine; this 2.0 litre 16 valve petrol engine was produced in 2006, 2007 and 2008.QR25 DE Engines; it was a massive 2.5 litre petrol engine with16 valves and was produced from 2000 till 2008. QR25 DE Engine; this 2.5 litre petrol engine with 16 valves was produced only in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
