The Parisian electric cars that are driving a greener future

The future of car travel is a problem that s been driving energy saving enthusiasts up the wall for decades, with electric automobiles failing to capture the attention of a mass market that s continued to prefer the gas-guzzling alternative. Until now, that is. 2012 will see Paris paving the way for what could be a revolution in greener car travel, as pay-as-you-drive electric cars hit the roads across the French capital.

Following in the cycle-treads of the city s Velib bike-sharing scheme an extremely popular service similar to London s own Boris bikes that s been rolled out in various forms in many cities across the continent the Autolib car service will see a fleet of electric vehicles based from 1,200 parking and charging points operating throughout Paris from this week.

Not only does the move prove a massive step forward for promoters of greener fuel sources, it could also decrease congestion in the busy capital, with less city-dwellers requiring their own personal vehicle when they ve got shared cars at their disposal. That s a by-product of the project that would be welcomed with open arms in the UK, and across the globe with over 1bn cars now clogging up the world s roads.

What s the cost of greener driving? Well, when you compare it to keeping your own vehicle on the road for the year, with the insurance, tax, maintenance and petrol costs that includes, then it works out pretty favourably. A 144 Euro annual subscription enables a driver to take cars out for a fee of 5 Euro per 30 min, with prices increasing if you choose for shorter subscriptions.

This isn t the first scheme of its kind similar electric car rental services already exist in the Netherlands and New York however, it s the first time such a fleet will operate on the latest generation of lithium-metal-polumer batteries, designed by pioneer Vincent Bollore, which promise to hold their charge up to five times longer than other fuel cells. It s a big step forward for electric car travel. Previous vehicles have always been criticised for the effective range (the distance they can travel before needing a recharge), but according to Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe these will have a range of 250km in town, sufficient for most inner-city outings.

With the four-seater bubble cars drawn from the creative mind of Italian designer Pininfarina of Ferrari and Maserati fame, they should look pretty slick on the Paris streets too. The question is, would you drive one? Is this the future of inner-city driving, or another white elephant?
