Model Update

It’s arrived! Elegant and spacious, Peugeot’s refined 508 is available for purchase. It sits as one of the upper end mid-to-large cars and is very nice to drive.

Three versions of the Peugeot 508 Sedan are available, and they swallow close to 500 litres of luggage in the boot. The base model is the Peugeot 508 Active. Priced competitively, the Active model is loaded with nice features.

Take a look at the twin-spoked 17-inch alloy wheels, the Bluetooth and USB connectivity, cruise control and speed limiter – with preset speed memory function, electric lumbar adjustment for the driver, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) for safety and the choice of leather or cloth trim.

Slip to the Peugeot 508 Allure and you’ll be attracted by the exquisite leather seats which are as comfortable as they come. The 508 Allure has a few other items to add to the Active’s list: a parallel parking space measurement system, an electric parking brake, electrically operated front seats, electronic parking assistance (front and rear), a hands free remote central locking and keyless push button start and a quad-zone climate control air-conditioning with individual rear controls.

Drive the 508 GT, and the experience is sure-footed, swift and pure pleasure. Sitting on 18-inch alloys and boasting the flagship 2.2 HDI engine, this is one car that can really cover the ground superbly.

Like them in wagon form? Then Peugeot offer the 508 as a Touring wagon, too.

French car maker, Peugeot, have made their latest offering quite a sensational motorcar. The all new Peugeot 508 replaces the outgoing 407 model. And after checking this one over, you are going to be impressed.

Powered by two very powerful HDi diesel engines, the Peugeot 508 comes with either the 2.0 HDi engine or the 2.2 HDi motor. These are class topping engines that deliver strong torque in the low to mid-range areas of both engine’s sonata. Sweet, smooth performance is what you’ll enjoy from the 340 Nm 2.0 HDi and the 450 Nm 2.2 HDi. For both engines, the maximum torque figures are found at 2000 rpm on a lengthy flat torque curve.

Interestingly enough, the 2.2 litre HDi unit is ever-so slightly more economical than the 2.0 litre HDi motor. But I wouldn’t be complaining at the pump when I experience the combined fuel consumption figure of 5.7 litres/100 km for the 2.0 HDi or 5.3 litres/100 km for the 2.2 HDi.

Are there any petrol variants? Yes…there is the powerful 1.6-litre Turbo unit that performs remarkably well. Linked to a six-speed gearbox and offering a 220 km/h top speed, the combined fuel cycle of just 7.1 litres/100 km is impressive. Impressively, the 1.6 Turbo delivers 240 Nm from 1400 rpm!

Now that is first-rate effortless performance.

A Peugeot 508 has a transverse front-wheel-drive drive train that is guided by a slick, well honed six-speed automatic or manual gearbox. Beautifully agile, the 508 sits right at the top of the class for best handling in its class. Mazda ’s 6 is excellent. Honda ’s Accord is excellent.

Alfa Romeo ’s 159 is a superb handler, too. So this is quite an achievement for Peugeot – yet again. The front MacPherson struts (double wishbones on the 508 GT) and rear multiarms offer superb cornering prowess. Sitting solidly on the road at high speed, the Peugeot 508 feels very safe and supremely swift.

If you’re on the right road, the new Peugeot 508 is uncannily quiet at over 160 km/h. Top speed for both 508 HDi engines is well over 220 km/h.

Safety is also an area that the 508 scores highly. You just can’t argue with a five-star EuroNCAP crash test result. Standard safety features include six airbags, traction control and an active stability programme.

Inside the very roomy cabin you’ll find a refined cosseting ride, beautifully comfortable seats and plenty of leg, head and shoulder space. Every 508 cabin has masterful build quality with touches of French flair and luxury. Leather seating, chrome trim, silver rimmed dials and all the latest electronics help you to feel very special, indeed.

I like the soft finished vinyls and leather materials. You can have the option of including wood finishing and satin metals to give the highest elegance to the 508’s cabin.

On the 508’s design front, the exterior is slightly more conservative, yet every bit as elegant as the outgoing 407. You have the choice of the sedan or wagon outfit. And, personally, I like the Smart drawn-out station wagon form which also swallows copious levels of luggage. Where the 407 has the aggressive bold grille at the front, the 508 has opted for a narrower slimmer grille – which is still large, but less in your face.

A noteworthy piece of information is that the 508 is 4.7 metres long – 10mm longer than the 407 and 20 mm shorter than the 607 flagship model.

Ensure you save up for this French beauty.

The current model series includes the:
