Peugeot Reveals Details of the 508 HYbrid4 Saloon and 508 RXH HYbrid4 Estate

Mike Bourne | 26th March 2012

Peugeot has revealed all the pricing and specification details for both their 508 HYbrid4 models – the range topping RXH and the regular Hybrid4. The former is available in the estate (or SW as per Peugeot) body style, while the latter is a saloon.

The Engine Specifications

Both models are equipped with a hybrid diesel engine. Most hybrids consist of a petrol-electric combination, which cannot match up to the efficiency and emissions provided by a similar sized diesel engine. According to Peugeot sources, the 508 HYbrid 4 is only the third car ever to use the diesel-hybrid engine set up.

A 2.0litre HDi diesel engine capable of delivering a maximum power of 163bhp powers the front wheels in both models. The electric component of the hybrid powertrain is represented by a 37bhp electric motor that drives the rear wheels. According to Peugeot insiders, this unique four wheel driving format “will enhance overall driving power and product versatility”.

The Performance

The 508 HYbrid4 Saloon is capable of a top speed of 130mph and manages to get to 62mph from standing in a respectable 9 seconds. These figures are quite impressive considering that the vehicle falls under the road-tax exempt bracket of sub 100g/km emission levels emitting 95g of carbon dioxide per kilometre driven. The fuel economy offered is 78.5mpg.

The car will attract a 10% Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) taxation.

For 508 RXH model, the acceleration to 62mph from zero takes an additional 0.5 seconds. The carbon dioxide emission levels rise to 105g/km (attracting a 12% benefit-in-kind taxation). The Peugeot 508 RXH HYbrid 4 estate returns a respectable 68.9 mph.

The top speed achievable is 130mph.

For comparison, the most economical model (till now), the Passat Alltrack offers a fuel efficiency of 49.6mppg and touches 62mph from zero in 10.9 seconds.

The Features and Specifications

The 508 HYbrid4 Saloon is more richly equipped as compared to the standard 508 Saloon. The standard features and equipment include ‘cruise’ option, ‘Hill Assist’ feature and dual zone air-conditioning. Bluetooth connectivity and part leather seats are also available as standard.

Externally, the model gets 18 inch alloys, electric folding mirrors and automatic lights and wipers.

The 508 RXH Estate is available in only one trim level that incorporates all possible hi-tech features. Besides the features available in the Saloon, the additional features in the RXH model include parallel parking assist, panoramic roof and a heads-up display. The model is designed in the ‘All road’ style, which ensures an increased height.

Pricing and Availability

Peugeot has announced that the 508 HYbrid4 saloon will be available starting from GBP31,450. The Estate 508 RXH will set you back by GBP33, 695. Not ‘cheap’, we know.

But you can look forward to long term cost savings on account of improved fuel efficiency and reduced BIK taxation.

With respect to availability, the 508 HYbrid4 Estate is all set to become available in the UK showrooms as early as May 2012. For the Saloon variant there is an additional waiting period of a couple of months. The 508 HYbrid4 slaoon will become available by July this year.

However, order bookings on both models are open now.
