European Greener Cars

The recent Frankfurt Motor Show revealed the European automotive industry’s firm commitment to electric vehicles (EVs).

Europe has a high proportion of diesel cars, however European automakers are developing a mix of hybrid and fully electric car technologies as they strive to cut emissions from new vehicles by 18 percent within six years. Hybrid models will be a bridge technology as Europe develops EV technology and infrastructure. In Europe today the law stipulates that car makers are responsible for the vehicles they create and they must find ways to recycle them at the end of their life.

Last year Fiat achieved the lowest volume-weighted average CO2 figure of Europe s top-selling brands along with Peugeot and Citroën. This year France’s PSA Peugeot Citroen is working with Mitsubishi Motors Corp on introducing an electric car to Europe at the end of 2010 or in early 2011, based on Mitsubishi’s iMiEV.

France’s Renault is promoting hybrid technology but it unveiled four electric vehicle concepts at the Frankfort show. The French manufacturer unveiled its iOn electric car, also based on partner Mitsubishi Motors’ iMiev.

A complete range of Renault’s Z.E. (Zero Emission) EVs will be mass marketed starting in 2011. The Twizy Z.E. concept-based city car is a versatile model that is expected to account for two-thirds of the Group s EV sales in Europe.

Renault’s sustainable mobility efforts extend beyond the cars they are producing. To minimize the footprint of additional transportation, Renault’s greener vehicles will be produced close to the markets they will serve.

The Smart Fortwo Ed is a 2 seat battery electric vehicle with a 72 mile range, it takes about 8 hrs to recharge. The Opel Ampera due to start production in 2011, is a 5door four seat extended range electric car that can be plugged in to household power outlets. It has a 60km emission -free battery range with a 500km extended range.

Higher end European car makers are also showing a serious interest in hybrid and fully electric vehicles. At the Franfort auto show Audi revealed it’s E-tronic electric sports car. Mercedes-Benz launched the S400 hybrid sedan earlier this year in Europe.

The S400 hybrid sedan runs partly on a lithium-battery and has a top speed of 250km/h. Mercedes-Benz plans to launch its S400 Blue hybrid with Li-ion battery next year.

BMW is trying to capitalize on their diesel models and they plan to introduce the X6 Hybrid and the 7-Series, but only in the US. BMW plans to launch its remodeled lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery-powered 750i luxury sedan to the Japanese in 2010. In 2009, BMW is also producing 500 all-electric MINI Es using Li-ion batteries.

The Mini E is a 3 door 2 seat electric car with a top speed of 95mph and a range of 150 miles. the Li-ion battery can charge in as little as 2.9 hours.

Full-hybrids are gaining in prominence as European car makers prepare the way for fully electric cars.
