Peugeot 3008 Review

The Peugeot 3008 is a late entry into the crossover, compact car market. Nissan established this type of vehicle in 2006 via their biggest selling model, the Qashqai. The Peugeot attempts to break into this market by combining elements from the MPV, hatchback, estate, and the SUV in the 3008.

What results is a tall body that offers a grip control system over the usual four-wheel drive associated with its size. Read on to know what the rest of the Peugeot 3008’s unique combination has to offer.

The Peugeot 3008 is the last of its kind to sport the brand’s famous oversized rictus grinning grille at the front. Unlike other models that do without this design, the 3008 ends up sporting a square frame that’s less caricature looking. The crossover compact design also sports a SUV-like ruggedness from its size. The 3008 model also employs a variation to the PSA’s Platform Two that provides rear suspension via a torsion beam.

Although the Peugeot has done away with the independent trailing arms in its chassis, the 3008s maintain power in a rear suspension that includes another central damper for body roll reduction.

Japanese company Kayaba is responsible for coming up with the 3008’s remarkable system. The KYB dampers from the company are mounted on a torsion beam and a central hydraulic cylinder connected to both of the rear dampers. Other parts of this intricate setup include the floating piston and a gas pressurized to 20bar just above it.

The piston moves freely when going along a straight road, going against the gas pressure so that the dampers’ oil can be displaced during the process. When the car turns into corners, the piston’s valve is locked by the pressure differences between dampers. This prevents any escape of the pressure as it builds up in the outer damper.

The 3008 ends up staying level as the damper’s action is stiffened.

The interior is readily adjustable according to every kind of passenger need. Multiflex, the 3008’s interior configurability, is able to automatically fold backrests flat upon pulling the respective handle in the boot space. Cushions on each seat can be moved forward or adjusted downwards so that there’s enough room made for the folded backrest. You can also adjust the fake boot floor according to three positions by going through several tilt-and-pull movements and then two higher levels so that a larger storage area is opened up.

In terms of leg and head room, the rear cabin provides more than enough and also provides a good forward view. Both storage and passenger space offer all around comfort. There are even additional storage spaces such as the two underfloor bins in the back and a box below the front central armrest.

Although the 3008’s 2.0-litre HDI engine gives a smooth, quiet, and punchy ride, its other unit choices such as the Hybrid4 is not as impressive. It’s barely faster than the 2.0 HDi when going through several gears, and its 60mph sprint time is just four tenths faster than the regular car. The Hybrid engine’s automated manual gearbox is to blame for its slow-witted and clunky charge that only goes at a little more than 50 per cent throttle.
