The 1962 Pontiac Tempest: A Car Half Of An Engine

The early Tempest models were interesting cars.  At that in the early 1960s, General Motors was trying some new at that time and the Pontiac was one of those innovative designs.  At time GM was introducing some size cars, but GM had not settled on the characteristics.

The 1962 Pontiac

The 1962 Pontiac Tempest had a design which is also referred to as a unibody design.  The car had a unique rear transaxle.  the front engine and the transaxle required a long, gently bar within a steel case the engine with the transmission.

I that the best analogy for arrangement is that the flexible worked much like a cable.

This 1962 Pontiac Was the LeMans Model

One of the interesting with this car was the 195 cubic four-cylinder engine.  At first this not sound particularly interesting, but the engine is one-half of the 389 cubic V8 engine that was used in the Pontiac cars at the time.

In  the Pontiac Tempest the 195 cubic 4-cylinder engine came power levels.  There was a low single-barrel carburetor version that 110 and the 4 cyclinder engines went up to a carburetor version that produced 166 The following advertisement shows the engine and availability for the 1962 Pontiac

This advertisement is also as it provides real information the car.  Today s car advertisments far less hard information the automobiles.

My take away on the Pontiac Tempest is: why did the Pontiac GTO not along until 1964 or Much has been written about how the guys at Pontiac started the muscle car era in North American car by putting the 389 cubic inch first as an option in the 1964 Tempest thereby leading to the of the great Pontiac GTO Wait a minute!  They mechanically doing this in

The real story is why did it take so long to quit cutting the 389 in half?  One could take a review of this situation and not about how clever the Pontiac were in 1964, but rather how they were in 1962 1961 when the Tempest appeared) when they cutting the 389 in half in the Tempest.  It to me that putting the whole 389 inch engine along  Pontiac transmission and rear would have been cheaper and faster than the 389 cubic inch engine in and then coming up with a transaxle for the rear axle.

While this post has on the 195 cubic inch four-cylinder the 1962 Pontiac Tempest also be supplied with the 215 inch aluminum block V8 that produced 190 horsepower.  is the same V8 engine that was sold to Rover and was also in such cars as the Triumph TR8 and the although with lower than the 190 horsepower that engine produced in the 1962 Tempest.

The car shown in photos was a LeMans model which is the top of the model.  The trim level quite nice.  The picture shows that this car had a floor-mounted shifter which would have had very shifter linkage leading to the transmission that was part of the transaxle.

This car also had the air conditioning as shown by the central unit mounted under the

As the transmission was co-located with the axle and there was a small line , there is a very hump in this rear drive car.

The 1962 Tempest Had a Very Tasteful

As much as I like the interior of the Pontiac Tempest I do find the of the electric clock in a separate pod on the otherwise clean flat to look a little out-of-place.  I don t if the electric clock would been an option in 1962, but in my a wrist watch would be than the addition of this clock on the dash.

The Electric Located on the Separate Pod On The Dash Like An After Thought

In summary, the 1962 Pontiac is a very interesting and innovative car.  of the innovations in the 1962 Pontiac were not further developed by GM at time and by 1964 the design of the Pontiac Tempest were with most of the other GM line.
