Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Review

The 2013 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid ranks 8 out of 19 Luxury Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid, as well as reliability and safety data.

The 2013 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid is ranked:

The 2013 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid offers good performance, especially for a hybrid, but its high price tag makes it hard for auto reviewers to recommend it over less expensive, more practical midsize luxury SUVs.

A supercharged V6 engine, electric motor and eight-speed automatic transmission make up the 2013 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid’s powertrain. Reviewers note that the Cayenne Hybrid produces plenty of power and are impressed with its acceleration from a stop. While many reviewers say the Cayenne Hybrid handles corners well, one test driver thinks its hybrid powertrain keeps it from being truly sporty and that it won’t appeal to driving enthusiasts.

Also, a few test drivers dislike the Cayenne Hybrid’s lack of steering feel and feedback. The EPA estimates that the Cayenne Hybrid will achieve up to 20/24 mpg city/highway, which is good, but less than the Lexus RX Hybrid and the diesel-powered Audi Q7 .

Auto writers praise the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid’s upscale interior and say its fit and finish is excellent. Critics say that lots of buttons clutter the dash and take time to learn, but reviewers prefer them over more-confusing setups in competitors. The Cayenne S Hybrid seats up to five, and test drivers say there’s ample room in both the front and rear seats. The majority of reviewers note that the front and back seats are comfortable and supportive. Standard features on the Cayenne Hybrid include a 10-speaker stereo, 7-inch touch-screen infotainment display and auxiliary audio jack.

Push-button start, navigation and heated front and rear seats are available as stand-alone options or in packages. The Cayenne Hybrid’s cargo space can’t match most other luxury midsize SUVs that have more, like the Acura MDX .

No doubt, Porsche has executed this confused concept well. — Automobile Magazine (2012) While you can ask if someone who can afford this SUV is all that concerned about fuel economy, (the marketplace will decide that), what you end up with is a super luxurious, fun to drive SUV with all the traits of a Porsche. — MarketWatch (2012) I suspect people who value the Porsche name and want the higher mileage — or perceived political cover — of a hybrid will appreciate the Cayenne S Hybrid, but the SUV doesn’t overcome its hybridness enough to satisfy performance enthusiasts. — Cars.com (2011) The bottom line: The Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid offers the performance you would expect from a Porsche, and better fuel economy. But the cabin tech isn’t up to the level of a car in this price range. — CNET (2011)

Other SUVs to Consider

If you’re planning on exploring rugged terrain, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a good choice. Reviewers say the Range Rover Sport is one of the best off-road SUVs on the market, but also has a comfortable on-road ride. The Range Rover Sport comes equipped with more standard features and is less expensive than the Cayenne Hybrid, but gets significantly lower fuel economy ratings.

The Audi Q7 is a solid alternative to the Cayenne Hybrid because it offers high safety scores and a fuel-efficient diesel model. The Q7’s TDI diesel model costs far less than the Cayenne Hybrid and achieves better fuel economy. The Q7 also has more cargo space and can seat up to seven.
