Hybrid Panamera Goodwood debut

GOODWOOD, England — The Porsche Panamera Gran Turismo E-Hybrid will make its debut at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend.

The car, launched in 2009, is the second generation and sees the range grow with the addition of the first plug-in hybrid in its class.

The range also sees a new twin-turbo, three-litre, V6 in the Panamera S and Panamera 4S. The V6 bi-turbo replaces the previous 4.8-litre V8.

IMPRESSIVE FIGURES

The Panamera S E-Hybrid first made its debut at the Shanghai auto show in China in April 2013. It makes 310kW combined power from the electric motor and the twin-turbo V6 engine. Only 70kW comes from the electric motor and lithium-ion battery and both can be recharged on the move or in four hours when plugged into a domestic socket.

Fuel economy is claimed to be 3.1 litres/100km, with71g/km CO2 and it goes from zero to 100km/h in 5.5 seconds with a top speed of 135km/h on electric power. Overall top speed is 270km/h.

Most Panamera models feature the seven-speed Porsche dual-clutch transmission. The eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic is used in the Panamera Diesel and Panamera S E-Hybrid.

According to Porsche, the E-Hybrid is much more developed than the brand’s previous full hybrid, with a more powerful electric motor, a higher-performance battery that supplies more energy and it can be recharged externally from the electrical grid.

POWER UP

The electric motor makes more than double the power of the full hybrid’s motor with 70kW compared to the previous 34kW and the new lithium-ion battery has over five times the 1.7kWh energy capacity of the previous (nickel metal hydride) battery technology with 9.4kWh. Electric acceleration, range and top speed have all been improved too.

It takes two hours to charge at an industrial outlet, 30 minutes more through the on-board charger and less than four hours when connected to a conventional household electrical outlet.

New convenience functions can be activated and called up by a smart phone app. These include charge status and the auxiliary aircon option that enables car pre-heating or cooling via cellphone. A smart phone can also manage the drive battery via remote access to vehicle information such as the remaining driving range or for guiding users back to their parked vehicles.

TWEAKS

Styling sees tighter lines, especially at the front, larger air intakes, swept back rear window, a new tailgate and a wider rear window. There’s also a wider spoiler, new diode headlights and the addition of adaptive cruise control, camera-based traffic sign detection and lane departure warning.

Standard items across the range includes: Bi-xenon headlights, multi-function steering wheel, auto opening boot, leather interior, dual aircon, parking sensors, cruise control, navigation with 18cm touch-screen, eight-way powered front seat, heated front seats and a three-year warranty.

All-wheel drive models add traction control.

All Panamera models also come with a Porsche vehicle tracking system (VTS) and UK customers get an advanced driving course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

The new generation Porsche Panamera will arrive in the UK from July 2013, priced from the equivalent of R955 000 for the Diesel to R1.6-million for the Turbo. The specs are below:
