Porsche Cayenne Hybrid — hybrid cars

The Porsche Cayenne has been flouting perceptions ever since it was introduced in 2001. The last thing anyone expected from celebrated sports car maker Porsche was an SUV — and yet there it stood. Now, Porsche is taking the model to a new level by introducing the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid.

The question is: can it have the same impact as the conventional model?

History of the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid

The idea behind the Porsche Cayenne was to safeguard the Porsche brand amid falling sales in the sports car sector. During the 1990s, the economic downturn hit the Porsche brand hard and so newly appointed CEO Wendelin Weideking decided that for Porsche to remain independent it would need to become profitable enough to pay for future development. This prompted the expanded line into the SUV field where Porsche could enjoy broader sales appeal.

With America crazy for SUVs at the time, it seemed like a natural solution. The Porsche Cayenne was created and within weeks of its launch reports emerged that Porsche had vastly reduced its debt and amassed a significant amount of cash.

The 2009 version of the Porsche Cayenne shares its basic design with the Volkswagen Touareg with all-wheel drive and low range gearing. However, Porsche has also announced a hybrid version of the Cayenne to debut ‘at the end of the decade’. It was revealed at the LA Auto Show in 2007.

Environmental credentials of the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid

Porsche has made some exceptional claims about the performance of the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid which utilises nickel metal hydride batteries like most hybrid cars.

For example, it can zip around at 75mph on battery power alone according to early suggestions. Critics have claimed that it is unlikely that the car can achieve this through battery power alone from a standstill. Instead, it is more likely that the engine can be shut off and the electric motor can be used alone while the vehicle is coasting having already achieved 75mph speeds.

Nevertheless, this is an important breakthrough in the SUV field. A green car that can break the SUV stranglehold particularly on the American markets is useful and with most Porsche owners already owning a second car, this could be a successful model that should hold a great deal of appeal with fuel consumption reported at just 26mpg on the EU combined cycle. The electric motor and petrol engine can operate together or independently and the system is being developed by the Volkswagen group.

The Porsche Cayenne Hybrid will feature other fuel saving features including electric power for power steering, air conditioning, the oil pump and the vacuum pump for the brakes.

Porsche Cayenne Hybrid statistics

At the moment few statistics are available about the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid as the model is not scheduled to be released for a couple of years. However, Porsche is thought to be aiming for fuel consumption at around 26mpg with 30+mpg possible in the future. It also expects to reduce CO2 emissions by around 20 per cent by 2012.

Future of the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid

Porsche stated that the Cayenne Hybrid will be released by the end of the decade – which could mean 2009 or 2010. It is part of a wider environmental focus from the manufacturer with all the latest Porsche models able to run on 10-25 per cent bioethanol.
