Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid brings plug-in performance to restyled 2014 Panamera line

2014 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid

Porsche takes its hybrid line another step forward with the 2014 Panamera S E-Hybrid, more powerful and more fuel efficient than the current Porsche Panamera S Hybrid. Adding the “E” means Porsche has added plug-in functionality to its four-door hybrid sedan.

What makes new Panamera S E-Hybrid faster is a more powerful electric motor, producing 95 horsepower, more than double the output of its predecessor’s 47-hp motor. The lithium-ion battery has significantly increased energy storage as well, at 9.4 kWh as opposed to 1.7 kWh of the standard hybrid’s battery.

The bigger motor enhances the Panamera S E-Hybrid’s acceleration, the new model able to crack off 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds, a half second faster than its predecessor. When a kickdown switch is activated by the driver, the S E-Hybrid will accelerate under gas and electric power.

The more powerful motor and bigger battery means greater electric motor-only performance as well. The range of under battery power alone is greater than 20 miles (based on current NEDC testing), naturally varying due to conditions including weather, terrain, heater and air conditioning, and driving style. The battery can be fully recharged in two and a half hours using a 240V power source.

“Coasting” enhances the 2014 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid’s fuel economy by turning off the gas engine when it’s not needed for maintaining speed, using only the electric motors as necessary.

The 2014 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid is part of a Panamera lineup that was rebodied with what Porsche calls “tighter lines, more pronounced contours and newly shaped body elements.”

The 2014 line also includes long wheelbase models, the Panamera 4S Executive and Panamera Turbo Executive. The executive goes in the back of the Executive Panamera models, which have 5.9 inches added to their wheelbase. Plus all Panamera Executives have Adaptive air-suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management.

Porsche also shuffled the engines for the gasoline-powered Panamera models. Gone is the naturally-aspirated 4.8-liter V8 of the previous-generation Panamera S and Panamera 4S, replaced by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine that increases the bottom line by 20 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque, with a maximum of 384 lb-ft across most of the twin-turbo’s operating range.

The Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) seven-speed transmission will be used on all Panamera models except the Panamera S E-Hybrid, which will be equipped with the eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic. Porsche has optimized the Auto Stop Start feature to turn off the engine earlier when coasting to a stop. Other than the Panamera GTS, the PDK transmission has a coasting function in overrun that allows the engine to idle and allows the vehicle to coast, much like the freewheeling transmissions of the early Saab two-… models, except more sophisticated electronic controls, for better highway fuel economy.

The 2014 Panamera models will be recognizable to the cognoscenti by larger air intakes and, as Porsche says it, “the transition to the headlights.” Also, wider rear glass with make the Panamera look wider overall, and the automatically-deploying rear spoiler is larger as well. Full-LED headlights will be optional on the 2014 Panamera.

A revised adaptive cruise control has been added with Porsche Active Safety (PAS). The driver is alerted to a sudden decrease in the distance to the car ahead both visually and audibly, and with a brief tug on the brakes. Brake assist has been added, and camera-based lane departure warning will be available.

Porsche also announced prices for the 2014 Panamera models:
