BMW Opens First i Brand Store in London, Redoes i3 Concept’s Interior, and Intros an e-Bike

BMW’s first two offerings from its electric-focused i offshoot, the i3 city car and the i8 sports car. are still undergoing development and won’t hit the streets until next year. In the meantime, though, the company is busy building brand awareness, and has opened the first i-specific store in London. Along with the storefront, BMW also announced it has given the i3 concept car a new super-sustainable interior and revealed an electric bike concept it’s calling the Pedelec.

Besides carrying a name that could furrow Apple’s collective brow, the new outlet in London will spearhead a variety of new efforts from BMW. For now, in the absence of any i cars to sell, the store will be used by BMW as an outlet through which to reach potential electric-vehicle customers. (The store is located between Mini and BMW dealerships.) BMW will use the store to educate consumers on how to live with an EV, as well as what BMW’s i vehicle line has to offer.

BMW i3, Now More Sustainable

BMW’s i3 concept car has been making the rounds at auto shows and other events since it debuted in Frankfurt last summer, but apparently the car’s interior wasn’t green enough. So BMW went ahead and mixed in a host of sustainable materials, including wood harvested from “sustainably managed” trees that are close to BMW’s European production facilities. The trees’ proximity ensures the delivery process is as green as possible, and the resulting wood inlays are finished with natural treatments.

As for the i3’s leather, BMW uses a natural tanning agent derived from olive leaves (we’re sure the ex-cows appreciate the sentiment). Finally, the i3’s dashboard and parts of its door panels get a unique wool covering.

BMW Pedelec Concept

If the all-electric i3 isn’t eco-friendly enough for you, BMW has revealed a new e-bike concept called the Pedelec, and two of the folding two-wheelers can fit in the i3’s trunk. There isn’t anything particularly special about the electric Pedelec aside from its ability to pair up with another one in the back of an i3. Perhaps this is BMW’s idea of a joke— Look, it has a range-extender! No, it has two range extenders! —or more probably it is simply following in the footsteps of Smart, which released a similar e-bike alongside the Fortwo Electric Drive.

A Brabus-tuned version of the Smart e-bike exists, but we won’t ever see an M-badged Pedelec—the company told us it likely won’t be M-ifying any i products. so the comparo’s cancelled.
