First Driving Impressions – Zoe

01/05/2013 — CAP Marketing

It seems moons ago since I first saw the model of the ‘Zoe-Concept’ at Renault’s I drove an early pre-production car a few ago at the CERAM test track Charles De Gaulle airport. Now later we finally get to drive the production car, at a test on the roads around Lisbon.

The Zoe is a looking, pretty and appealing car some really nice It looks good from angle, and from the front it is recognisable as a Renault as it gets the new nose. The large triangular badge is now being fitted to the of the range, and makes a Renault identifiable.

The cost of the Zoe (after the of the 25% or up to £5000 Government Plug-In starts from £13,650 and up to £14,750 OTR. On top of the initial of the car though there is an additional payment for renting the battery. cost depends on annual and the length of the Contract. For example: 36 months with an annual of up to 7,500 it is £70 per month.

Over 12 months with an mileage of up to 12,000 it would be per month.

The Zoe is pure electric and is by Lithium Ion batteries, running an motor with a power of 65kW (equivalent of 88hp if you The Zoe is homologated in the official NEDC to have a range of 130 miles, gives a useful benchmark for all Vehicles, but like petrol and MPG figures, they can be way off the tested when driving the car on everyday However Renault have realistic and said that in conditions the driver can expect to around 60 miles in cold and up to 90 miles in warmer temperatures.

We charged the car up twice to 100% in Lisbon, on the first charge it got to range, and on the second charge it got up to range, why the difference on the same nobody could really as our driving style was the same.

time for the Zoe can range from 30 for a quick charge (which can the battery up to 80% capacity) and up to nine-hours for a charge (which will the battery up to its full capacity). is an additional payment for each Charge used in Europe, but no has been made for this in the UK

Charging the battery on the Zoe can become as it only comes with a charging plug, and not a standard household plug. So if you are in the position you go to a friend’s house, and need the charging, you can’t, unless have a comparable charging Renault are offering a free wallbox with every new Zoe but this doesn’t really the issue, and it’s unfortunate the Zoe’s can’t have a 3 pin plug.

The much smaller Twizy with a 3-pin plug as but the Twizy has a 6.1 kWh battery, compared to the larger 22 kWh battery on the Zoe.

The Zoe be available in three trim when it goes on-sale June 7th. These be the: Expression, Dynamique Zen and Intens.

The base car (the is hardly a base car, as the specification it boasts is pretty and includes: R Link voice TomTom Sat/Nav with touch-screen, Climate Control, Control, LED DRL’s, Hill Assist, low speed pedestrian and pre-conditioning of interior temperature vehicle is on charge).

Renault filled the Zoe full of technology, the way it drives, and nice-to-haves for the occupants, and sure these systems soon be offered in Future

Lisbon, contains the second number of Plug-In points of any (Amsterdam is currenly number and they are readily available, the location for the launch. We drove the Zoe on a of roads, and motorways around On the motorway it easily cruised at the limit of 130kph, and got up to that relatively easily. Through test we found the Zoe to be quick, and extremely quiet, so quiet in that when you are driving in a or village, you can find yourself up on pedestrians who are walking across or by the as they simply cannot you. This is because the Zoe is powered by pure electric and is silent, all you can hear is a faint from the motors.

This has the of being a nice quiet to sit and listen to the radio in peace, but the is pedestrians cannot hear you which can be a huge disadvantage and dangerous. The question that has asked time and time is why not put on an audible warning noise? The is that some countries, the UK are not allowed by law to have any audible noises between the hours of and 7.00am.

The interior is up to a high build and standard throughout, except for the arm rests which are so hard it is on your elbows, and you soon not to rest on them. There is quite a bit of reflection on the windscreen the window demisters, which is annoying, and even though the Zoe is a three adults in the rear be a bit cramped.

I have to say, the Zoe, is by far the best EV driven to they have got just everything right, except for a few niggling things. For those who around  60 miles per day, and can up to nine-hours to re-charge, it could be a and cheap form of transport.

EV sales around the world been fairly slow up to and it will be interesting to see if interest in Electric Vehicles will off to a level that was predicted a few ago. My guess though is they won’t.
