IAA 2009: E-Cars Moved On

2009-09-21 — 187 world premieres, 781 exhibitors from 30 countries, including 62 car makers, on 190.000 square metres — the 63rd International Motor Show that took place from September 17 to 27, 2009 in Frankfurt (Germany) has been dedicated to green cars. The fact that alternative powertrain technologies dominated the fair was not surprising but the bandwidth and the number of hybrid and electric vehicles that have been presented at the IAA exceeded the spectator’s expectations.

Here it is actually becoming visible how the companies are coming out of the crisis: with even greater research and development efforts and with even more attractive products, said Matthias Wissmann, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry VDA, at the opening press conference. Besides the well-known electric cars such as the Mini E, the Tesla sports car and the Smart, Renault displayed four electric concept cars: Twizy, Zoe, Fluence and Kangoo Zero Emission (Z. E.) being powered by electric motors between 15 kW and 70 kW driving ranges of up to 160 km. Kangoo, Fluence and Twizy Z. E. are planned to go into series production in 2011, Zoe Z. E. in 2012; explained Press Officer Raluca Barb. We want to sell the cars for the price of an equivalent Diesel.

Costumers can rent the battery and services for different distances.

Peugeot presented the electric car iOn and the BB1 concept car which is fitted with electric motors in the rear wheels, designed in association with Michelin. This set-up maximises the interior space and provides a maximum power output of 15 kW, 7.5 kW per motor. The lithium-ion batteries enable a range of 120 km.

The Hybrid 4’s combined maximum power can reach 147 kW by adding the 120 kW of the 2.0 l HDi FAP diesel engine and the temporary peak power of the electric motor (27 kW).

Watt’s link in Rear Axle

Besides the Ampera, the Corsa and Insignia Eco Flex, Opel displayed the new Astra for the first time. The new five-door hatchback’s chassis has been developed as a mechatronic system that fully integrates mechanical functions and electronic controls. It provides significant improvements in steering response and ride comfort. While the chassis has the proven McPherson strut layout at the front, Opel engineers are the first to combine a compound crank rear axle with a Watt’s link. This supports lateral forces on the suspension while cornering, also makes the car dynamic and agile without compromising on stability and comfort.

With the new rear axle with a Watt’s link we gain additional space for example for a gas container in a future CNG driven model, which is a huge competetive advantage right now, said Rьdiger Hiemenz, Head of Chassis Development.

Hybrid Cars from all Around the Globe

Mercedes-Benz’ Vision S 500 Plug-in Hybrid technology vehicle demonstrates the future of the German car manufacturer’s modular hybrid system and consumes 3.2 l/100 km in the NEDC. The vehicle can cover up to 30 km on electric power and emits 74 g of CO2. The drive system consists of three main components: a V6 petrol engine with direct injection, a hybrid module with roughly 44 kW and a lithium-ion battery with more than 10 kWh of storage capacity that can be recharged at charging stations.

Hyundai displayed the Blue-Will, a full Plug-in Hybrid Electric concept car. The vehicle promises an electric-only driving distance of up to 64 km on a single charge and a fuel economy rating of up to 2.2 l/100 km. Weight could have been reduced by using carbon-fibre reinforced plastics and nano composites at the side sills, moldings and fenders.

An Eco-Coach display helps promote fuel-saving driving habits by providing continuous feedback on fuel consumption and driving efficiency. The concept is powered by an all-aluminum 112 kW gasoline direct injected 1.6 l engine which is coupled to a continuously variable transmission and a 100 kW electric motor, the heart of Hyundai’s parallel hybrid drive architecture. Fuel tank and Li-Ion Polymer battery back are under the rear seat.

On the panoramic roof, the glass area integrates dye-sensitised solar cells that helps operate a cabin cooling fan.

At 12.000 m2 BMW displayed amongst others the Vision Efficient Dynamics concept car, a plug-in car with full-hybrid technology. The drive technology propels the car up to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h, with acceleration from a standing start to 100 km/h in 4.8 s. Average fuel consumption is 3.76 l/100 km with a CO2 rating of 99 g/km. Performance and fuel economy are made possible by the combination of a downsized three-cylinder 1.5 l turbocharged common rail turbodiesel with a hybrid synchronous motor on the front axle and a full-hybrid system at the rear.

The overall output of the three drive units is 262 kW, maximum torque 800 Nm. In overrun and when applying the brakes, the electric motor fitted on the rear axle acts as a generator feeding electric power into the car’s lithium-polymer battery. As a result, this electrical energy is generated without any additional consumption of fuel.

The driver also has the option to charge the car’s electric battery from a conventional power socket. In all, no less than 98 lithium-polymer cells are fitted on board of the new concept car, with the fuel tank offering a capacity of 25 l giving a cruising range in the combustion mode of approximately 650 km. Adding the range of up to 50 km in the all-electric mode, the car is able to cover a distance of approximately 700 km.

Body elements serve as air guide vents optimising the drag coefficient to 0.22.

What remains exciting is if one gets to see all the presented cars on the road in the next five years. Despite the crisis, the 63rd IAA was a feast to the eyes — and a moving experience, down the road to sustainable mobility.
