With sales of the 2011 Nissan LEAF set to begin next month, Nissan is looking ahead at other opportunities to introduce all-electric cars into its line-up. Back in September, Nissan released some details about a luxury EV based on the Leaf, but now a report from Automotive News indicates that Nissan is also planning a delivery van and a two-passenger EV car. In total, the report says that the Renault-Nissan alliance will be spending $5.6 billion to develop eight new EV models.

Sometime after the 2011 Leaf, Nissan will unveil an all-electric cargo/delivery van which will probably be based off the Nissan NV200. This new electric van is destined to go up against the Ford Transit Connect Electric which is due out by the end of this year. Nissan officially confirmed the NV200 EV, but it did not give any details or a timetable for production.

While this latest report is equally devoid of any concrete details about the new EV model, Pierre Loing, Nissan’s European head of product planning and electric vehicles said that the Leaf is ‘only the starting signal for the manufacture of an entire electric vehicle family.

Following the Nissan Leaf and NV200 EV, Infiniti already has plans to launch a sportier, more luxurious version of this car around the globe, including in the United States, due to go on sale in 2013. Based off the single sketch Nissan showed, the yet-to-be-named Infiniti EV will ditch the hatchback styling of the Leaf in place of a more stylish sedan shape. Unlike some of the current Infiniti models, like the 2011 Infiniti M, the new EV will lose some of the curvaceous lines, but the sketch still shows pronounced fender arches and possibly even a creased shoulder line.

With such a sleek design, it is no surprise that Infiniti admits that the Infiniti EV will have a primary focus of being a sporty, high-performance luxury sedan. but it will still offer the same zero-emissions driving of the Leaf. In the past, Nissan’s president and CEO, Carlos Ghosn, said last year that the Infiniti EV will be a ‘compact, high performance four-seat luxury Infiniti with zero emissions,’? while the newest press release stated that the car will seat five passengers. Although the specifics of this car’s electric driver system are still a mystery, it will probably use a similar lithium-ion battery pack as the Leaf and get a comparable 100-mile driving range.

‘This future EV will play a major part of Infiniti’s ‘eco performance’ strategy that will see a greater focus on hybrid and EV technology,’? said Infiniti Vice President Ben Poore. ‘We are committed to applying the world’s best technologies to reduce emissions without sacrificing driving excitement or engagement.’?

Finally, by 2014 Nissan could be ready to introduce yet another EV based off the recently introduced Nissan New Mobility Concept. This ultra-compact tow-seater is essentially a rebadged Renault Twizy, and it uses the same 15kW motor to power the car to speeds up to 47 miles per hour with an expected range of around 60 miles. Based on these stats alone, the New Mobility Concept won’t be an EV for the everyday driver, but Nissan is looking into alternative possibilities for the car’s use such as ‘seamless mobility service’? and ‘two-mode EV car sharing.’?

The seamless mobility service would pair the small EV up with public transportation, while the two-mode car sharing would use the car as a commuter car in the morning and at night and used for business purposes (likely short-distance business errands or travel meetings) during the day. A third Nissan idea would use the car in urban environments or tourist locations possibly in a similar fashion as the Segway — one of Nissan’s bullet points in its press release was that the New Mobility Concept has the size and maneuverability similar to a motorcycle with improved safety.
