Reader review: Renault Clio 66 kW Turbo Dynamique

In 1991, Renault broke the long-standing tradition of giving their cars numbers rather than names by introducing the first-generation Clio.

Because Renault pulled out of South Africa in 1985, South Africa missed out on the first Clio, but when the Clio 2 was introduced here in 1999, it won the Car of the Year title. The fourth-generation Clio has just been introduced, and the question is whether it can hold its own amid strong competition in the B segment.

The new Clio is very attractively-styled, and introduces a bold new “family look”, which will also be seen on other new Renaults to be released this year, among others the facelifted versions of the Fluence and the Sandero and the Duster.  The rear door handles are placed high up, like those on the Chevrolet Spark and Sonic, which make them difficult to reach for children. Otherwise, it should get a nod of approval from most people, even those who profess to dislike Renault.

The main talking point in the interior is the touch-screen multimedia display, which features a navigation system, a radio with a USB port and Bluetooth. A CD player is conspicuous by its absence, and that might influence a purchase decision adversely. The instrument panel is a clever mix of analogue and digital instruments, but it is a bit strange to see a conventional fuel gauge instead of the LED display fitted to the Sandero.

On the other hand, some people prefer it that way.  There is just enough space for four people and although the luggage compartment is perhaps a bit smaller than that of the Sandero, it compares well to its competitors.

The test model was the top-of-the-range Dynamique, featuring the controversial 900 cc three-cylinder turbocharged engine. This engine develops 66 kW at 5250 r/min, and a very healthy 135 Nm at a low 2 500 r/min. This means that it is not as powerful as the Ford Fiesta Eco Boost, but that does not really matter because the the Clio feels powerful enough. The distinctive three-cylinder engine note is apparent, but not intrusive, and this might be one of the most attractive features of the car for real enthusiasts.

The Dynamique also comes with an Eco Mode, for those who want to use even less fuel.  This works quite well in practice, although it is better to stick to the normal driving mode under most circumstances. It should be possible to achieve fuel consumption of more than 20 kilometres per litre, which is excellent for a car in this class.

The Dynamiqe is priced at R179 900, which is very reasonable considering the advanced technology. This includes a service plan valid for three years or 45 000 km, whichever comes first, and the warranty of five years or 150 000 km is one of the best in the business. Moreover, the Dynamique is only R10 000 more expensive than the Expression, which is a bit too close. For that extra money, you get keyless entry with the same Renault key card fitted to larger Renaults, electric rear windows, a rain and light sensor and 17 inch alloy wheels.

However, automatic air conditioning remains optional, whereas a rear parking sensor and a fixed glass roof can also be had at extra cost.

The Clio is probably one of the best buys in its class, especially because its reasonable price is a big surprise.  The fact that a CD player is not available under any circumstances is a pity, but if you can live with that, you will get a very attractive car that is capable of giving years of motoring pleasure, provided the technologically-advanced engine proves reliable.
