Ken Ramirez has become managing director of Renault UK, replacing Thierry Sybord, following his move to a European role within the company.

Sybord, who has earned much respect for his reorganisation of loss-making Renault UK, has been promoted to a European role with the carmaker.

Ramirez was managing director of Nissan Latin America and the Caribbean, responsible for all of the Nissan and Infiniti brands’ operations in the region, covering 37 countries.

Ramirez said: Under Thierry’s leadership, Renault UK has made significant progress through its business evolution plan, at both company and dealer levels.

I look forward to continuing to rebuild our brand value and market presence in the months ahead. With six great new models to launch within less than six months, including the stunning new Renault Clio and the introduction of the Dacia brand and its initial line-up of Duster, Sandero and Sandero Stepway, we are clearly affirming our commitment to our loyal and new customers as well as to our partners in the dealer network.

I’m eager to get to know the UK market and confident of the exciting future for our Renault and Dacia brands in the UK.

Puerto Rico born Ramirez joined Nissan in 2002 following more than 10 years at Motorola’s Automotive Electronics and Telematics Communications groups. He has held various roles at Nissan Technical Centre North America, Nissan Technical Centre Japan, Nissan North America, Nissan Mexicana and Nissan Latin America and the Caribbean.

He has a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and has more than 20 years of experience in the automotive industry in US, Japan, Mexico and Latin America.

He has held leadership roles in RD, program management, corporate planning and sales and marketing.

As with tradition he will be invited to take up the Presidency of the Renault Owners Club at the next AGM.

Renault UK is set to rebuild in 2013 after the challenge of the last year, according to Thierry Sybord, its managing director.

Sybord said the company has done everything it had set out to do in 2012 – rationalisation of its product range to focus on profitable models, roll out of the 4+ package, reduction of its sales points by a third, and cut the fixed costs at head office.

That was the transition phase of Renault UK’s renewal plan. Now it is preparing to launch six cars in six months: The Duster, Sandero and Sandero Stepway under its new value-priced Dacia brand, and a fourth generation Clio, B-segment SUV badged Captur and Zoe electric car under the Renault brand.

Sybord added: “The good news for us is that in 2012 we did the most difficult thing, with all the cuts. But it means we start 2013 in a much healthier situation.

It doesn’t mean it will be easy, but we are in the best shape we’ve ever been in.”

He said the cuts in the franchised network – the closure of some 60 locations – were done in a human way.

It wasn’t an easy decision, but Renault talked to franchisees on a case by case basis, he said, and partners understood the reasoning behind its actions.

Equally difficult were the redundancies at head office, which meant the loss of some skilled and very experienced people.

Now dealers are fired up at the opportunities presented by Dacia and the new Clio and Captur.

Clio, described as a strategic car for Renault, is expected to account for more than 25,000 annual sales, many of them conquesting customers from other brands.

Around 2,000 forward orders have already been taken for Dacia ahead of the brand’s launch next month – the dealers used left hand drive cars to show customers until the RHD models arrived from India in late December.

Sybord said Dacia has enjoyed success elsewhere in Europe — including becoming the fifth largest retail car brand in France — so he cannot see it failing in the UK, the last country to launch it.

Many customers will come from the used car market, and some will be existing Clio owners who cannot afford the step up to Renault’s more premium new model.

Dacia is a ‘pull’ business model, Sybord said, and has no volume bonus for dealers, so sales will be real sales.

THOUSANDS FLOCK TO SILVERSTONE FOR WORLD SERIES BY RENAULT

A stunning 120,000 people flocked to the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit on 20 th /21 st August to enjoy a exhilarating weekend of free motorsport action as the World Series by Renault returned to the renowned venue.

Motorsport fans from across the country passed through Silverstone’s gates for the two-day event, including 75,000 on Sunday alone, firmly placing World Series by Renault as the UK’s second largest motorsport meeting behind the British Grand Prix.

World Series by Renault, making its fourth visit to the Northamptonshire circuit, treated visitors to some of the best international and national racing plus high-speed, tyre-smoking demonstrations from the Lotus Renault F1 Grand Prix car with Romain Grosjean and Jan Charouz as well as a host of family entertainment and off-track activities.

In addition, the free event gave open paddock access to the fans, including a pit lane walkabout, enabling them to get up close to the teams and drivers competing on the 3.67-mile circuit.

In between the action-packed racing, thousands of spectators took advantage of the free off-track entertainment. Realistic driving simulators allowed visitors to test their own skills. Youngsters were kept entertained with special play areas which included inflatables, dodgems and a carousel as mums and dads admired the entire Renault range of cars, vans and trucks.

The Canadian’s double success means he leaves the UK with a solid lead at the top of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series championship standings. It also secures a first Team title for Carlin boss Trevor Carlin and his UK team. a victory they fittingly celebrated on home soil.

The Eurocup Megane Trophy also thrilled crowds with fantastic wheel-to-wheel racing. After securing a tenth pole position and a ninth victory of the season, Stefano Comini was duly reward by winning the Eurocup Megane Trophy 2011 title at Silverstone. The success is made all the more remarkable by the fact that there are still four races of the season remaining.

The Formula Renault UK Championship enjoyed two action-packed races over the weekend. For the national-level drivers in the series it was a rare opportunity to compete on the esteemed Silverstone Grand Prix circuit and in front of packed grandstands. Renault’s illustrious past.

Renault’s proud motorsport heritage was celebrated by a crowd-pleasing display from rally legend Jean Ragnotti at the wheel of his formidable 350bhp Renault 5 Maxi Turbo. This was complemented by a display of 200 classic and competition Renaults from the owner’s clubs including a celebration of the 50 th anniversary of the R4.

Commenting on the weekend, Renault UK Managing Director, Thierry Sybord, said, ‘Renault has a long and celebrated tradition of motorsport of which we are extremely proud and we’ve once again been able to showcase this through the World Series by Renault.
