Skoda Rapid Spaceback 1.6 TDI CAR review

is the Skoda Rapid Spaceback, takes the elongated Audi hatch-cum-estate template and applies it to lacklustre Rapid.

However, 180mm shorter overall and inferior in the bootspace department, not an open-and-shut case that the is the one to go for. After all, it has space in the, ahem, And at £1435 more than its sister in basic form, the has some ground to regain.

Read on for the CAR verdict.

What’s the Rapid Spaceback got going for it?

– it looks neater and better than the paint-dryingly dull Rapid. It’s also a UK-targeted proposition: though the car has a larger boot, its small profile isn’t one we Brits to fall for – see also VW Golf Jetta.

The dog-friendly tailgate more sense over – though there is a hefty sill lip to conquer before starts moulting over the boot floor.

What further forward?

The cabin is actually something of a Look at the rear quarters outside and the dingy bench as inviting as a 3am bus shelter. But, aboard and there’s actually of room – easily enough for passengers to ride behind a driver with no headroom or complaints.

And in the front seat, the gets better still, ample space for taller

We drove a mid-sped Rapid SE, which sits above S but below the more opulent models. It contains standard touch-points, classy metallic and techy goodies like control and electric rear

Our test car also had optional infotainment with sat-nav and control to lift the VW parts-bin of ’06 reunion cabin. And, for options (worth a total of it might just be worth it. The but intuitive interfaces do wonders for the and perceived quality inside – the last Rapid we drove, did without said goodies, was lacking.

However, the same remain – a driving position by a steering column that give enough reach for drivers, and the swear-worthy armrest, can be adjusted to make gearchanges cumbersome, or impossible entirely.

How’s the driving experience?

Not of an experience, as you’d expect. is largely dictated by the weight of the diesel engine in our test which makes for nose-heavy you’ll feel through the inertia, rather then the light, numb steering.

a gruff motor, downright on start-up, but it is noticeably better than the last Rapid we drove, which rattled an electric toothbrush locked in a cabinet. The ride comfort to have been dialled up despite there being no alterations between Rapid and Spaceback.

Leaving all obvious aside, the Rapid isn’t, but it makes decent progress the 1.6 mill on board, and though the 64.2mpg is ambitious, an everyday is entirely plausible. There are five gears to operate via the manual shifter, but they’re spaced to cater to the derv’s 1500-2500rpm torque band.

We’re so used to product releases from the VW brand that it’s to get one’s head around the Spaceback. Though it’s a above a capacious Dacia MCV in terms of refinement and build it’s £755 pricier (in SE than an identically specced hatchback, which is a lot to pay for a more shape and less cumbersome Skoda does make really likeable and simple-to-recommend these days, but this really one of them.
