Mahindra to develop bigger and more powerful electric technology, SsangYong looks on to share

Mahindra Reva is certainly banking big on the electric technology to produce future cars in India and abroad. Mahindra Reva has recently launched the company’s first electric vehicle (EV), the e2o on 18th of March. While Mahindra Reva is still waiting to get a proper customer response of this 4 seater passenger car. the company is already working on something much bigger using the electric technology.

According to the reports, Mahindra is working full swing on the development process of a bigger electric vehicle as compared to the compact e2o. Although, it is not yet clear whether the car would be a sedan or a SUV, the company has revealed that this new larger vehicle’s technology might be utilized by the company’s fully owned South Korean subsidiary SsangYong as well.


Mahindra Mahindra being India’s leader in the SUV segment has been coming up with great successful SUV models in the domestic market that has ensured the company’s positive growth even the slumped market conditions. The Indian SUV master is not resting and is working with greater vigor to produce a range of new cars for both the Indian and other global markets. However, Mahindra does not want to excel only in the SUV segment and is trying its hand in other segments as well such as the compact sedan segment, in which the Verito CS is ready to be launched.

As for the sake of innovation and the betterment of the future mobility Mahindra is betting on electric cars along with its undertaken electric vehicle company Reva.

The Indian auto giant is thus developing a new bigger electric vehicle platform. This new EV platform will be used for higher powered vehicles. The entire development process of the bigger and more powerful EV is currently taking place at the Research and Development centre of Mahindra Reva Bangalore.

As the development process is really in the embryonic stage right now, Mahindra has not given any further details as on the vehicles that will be launched based on this new EV platform. However, the company did confirmed that the new technology will be used for Mahindra as well as SsangYong vehicles after the development process is completed. This news also confirms that the technology will be used in some future compact SUVs from the Mahindra SsangYong stable.  Apart from these facts, Mahindra has also revealed that the company is investing a whopping Rs. 150 crores for development of electric variants of the Gio, Maxximo and Verito.

According to reports, the electric versions of these three vehicles will be launched after Mahindra gets further market response for the newly launched e2o.

As far as the sales of the new e2o are concerned, market response so far has been only lukewarm. Mahindra Mahindra has confirmed that the bookings for the brilliant EV have been below the expectations. The e2o was first launched in Delhi with a price tag of Rs.

5.96 lakhs following which the car has been also launched in Bangalore.
