SsangYong is a Korean brand with a long and interesting heritage, despite their vehicles only having moderate success locally. However, one might be forgiven for thinking that SsangYong had been on a sabbatical for the past few years. In fact, the Korean manufacturer has been sitting on the sidelines in world markets for the past five.

The company has travelled a rocky road recently, having been placed into receivership in 2009 after recording a $75.42 million loss.

The new Korando is set to spearhead SsangYong’s recovery and for SsangYong in South Africa the future is looking brighter by the minute with a 70% increase in spending on product development and quadruple the amount the in brand building.

Design overview:

The Korando, a reliable product with a Mercedes-Benz sourced turbo diesel engine, a rugged chassis and a dual-range transmission, has been styled under the direction of legendary stylist Giorgetto Giugiaro and is underpinned by the company’s first ever monococque platform.

There are hints of Chevrolet Captiva and the previous-generation Hyundai Tucson/Kia Sportage especially about the nose. The rear profile sports vertical tail-lamps reminiscent of the Rexton’s and the car’s stocky overall appearance is also a lot more generic and less polarizing, in its execution.

Interior overview

The Korando’s interior has been crafted to achieve comfort and practicality. Standard equipment includes leather covered seats, a 6-way adjustable driver’s seat with height adjustment and lumbar support, reclining rear seats with a 60:40 split layout and cruise control.

Other standard features include a Bluetooth audio system for the driver’s seat, fully automatic air conditioning, tinted glass all around, roof rails, alloy wheels, leather steering wheel trim, USB and auxiliary ports, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights, electric windows, two 12 volt power outlets and an electrochromatic rear view mirror, to name but a few which are among the standard features earmarked for SA-bound cars.

Hard wearing plastics impart a feeling of durability, while the switchgear follows a logical layout. The dark shades of the interior are interspersed with silver and chrome highlights, giving the cabin a modern feel. The cabin also offers a number of convenient storage areas, as well as a hook located in the front passenger footwell for securing the odd shopping bag.

The various storage spaces are available including a centre fascia tray, a door pull handle tray and a large map pocket. The glove box contains a partition tray and a credit card holder, while there’s also the added convenience of a hook to secure a carrier bag. The luggage area holds 486-litres of luggage with a large under-floor tray.

Exterior overview

Developed and designed in partnership with renowned stylist Giorgetto Giugiaro . SsangYong has focused on infusing the new Korando with quality and desirability; a radical departure from what we’ve come to expect from Ssangong’s designers.

The high bonnet line, bold air intake, flared wheel arches and masculine shoulder line, all serve to endow the new Korando with a character that appeals to South Africa’s SUV-loving masses.

The new body-coloured door handles and rugged grey cladding on the lower surfaces are good touches, as is the ambient lighting cast from the door mirrors..

A large glasshouse (and this is where the Sportage suffers) ensures great visibility from the cabin and delivers a great sense of space in the living area. The raised body means there’s no intrusive transmission tunnel in the rear, where three occupants can be seated comfortably with great access to an array of hidey holds and holders.

Technical data overview:

The SsangYong Korando rides on an all-new platform that is said to provide ride and handling characteristics close to that of a conventional road car. It offers great cabin comfort and interior ergonomics. Extensive NVH engineering isolates occupants from external interruptions ensuring a smooth ride thanks to a double bush-type sub-frame mounted suspension system with McPherson struts up front and multi-link rear suspension.

The Korando comes in both a front-wheel drive and manual transmission configuration and an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive configuration.

In terms of passenger safety, the Korando features dual front, side and curtain airbags as standard while there is also multifunction ESP that integrates anti-rollover protection, brake assist, hill start assist and Emergency Stop Signal. Active head restraints and ISOFIX anchors are also standard. Korando is fitted with an eco cruise control system that efficiently manages the amount of fuel injected to maximise economy.

Engine overview

The new Korando features a new platform, a new design and a new engine, bringing an entirely fresh approach from SsangYong to the crossover market. At the heart of the new Korando is SsangYong’s e-XDi200 2.0-litre diesel engine, mated to 6-speed manual gearbox, developing 130kW of power and 360Nm of torque which means it is one of the most powerful engines in its class and does not leave the Korando wanting for pace.

A combined fuel economy of 6.0-litres/100km and carbon emissions of just 157g/km this 2.0-litre turbocharged unit incorporates the latest technology to achieve Euro-5 emissions regulations, as well as being adaptable to future Euro-6 rules.

It also features third generation common-rail fuel-injection, E-EGR (Electric Exhaust Gas Recirculation), swirl control valve and CDPF (Catalysed Diesel Particulate Filter).
