Review: 2014 Subaru XT

The Forester is a critical piece of s sales pie. It made up 23% of sales last year. re hoping to continue seeing with the all-new 2014 which is longer, wider and than the last model.

makes no bones about it re positioning it as an SUV these days. it have the chops to deliver on positioning?

Pricing

Options:

Freight:  $1650

Price as tested:  $39,745

If you know your Subarus, you ll the Forester instantly recognizable. But the is a nice one, and the XT adds a few touches especially at the front end its lower side intakes and in the wells, which are filled lovely 18-inch rims 225/55-sized rubber.

Though up, the lines remain clean, and business-like. As it s coming toward the XT glares with cool LED lighting, and at night, the HID headlights great and do a good job lighting the ahead of you.

It s tough to but somehow, the new Forester has a more appearance when it s on the road. might have to do with the width.

Under the Hood

It t be a Subaru if it didn t have a boxer engine under the The XT gets Subaru s new 2.0-litre direct injection boxer an intercooled twin-scroll turbocharger. It up the power to 250 horsepower at rpm and a juicy 258 lb.ft of torque s available to you from 2000 all the way to RPM.

CVT haters will be to find just that a CVT as the option for the XT. I m here to tell you it ain t bad at and I m no fan of CVTs. But more on that The Lineartronic CVT has a manual mode, and you can access two different sport One is called SI mode, which the transmission feel like it has six and the more aggressive S# (sharp) bumps things up to eight ratios.

Essentially these modes 6- or 8-speed automatics. Of course, the makes its way to all four corners a symmetrical all-wheel drive

Fuel economy is rated at 8.9 km (26 mpg) in the city and 7.2 L/100 km (33 on the highway. I averaged 10.6 km (22 mpg) during my week it. That was mostly slow commuting, and when I had the space, I it hard. More about later as well. The tank 60 litres.

By the way, you can run the XT harm-free on fuel with the loss of a few horsepower.

A few people bemoan the of the hood scoop. But the best is that there is still air routing happening under the without the boy racer scoop. it out!

Interior/Tech/Convenience

The Forester s got a make-over too. And it is gorgeous! I was just seeing if you re paying The styling is pretty tame s nothing exciting going on but everything works well.

materials however, have significant improvement. The dash is of soft plastics and you ll find like handsome stitched and panels on the doors.

Once you ll likely find the cabin the headroom was great for my 5 10 frame, with the gargantuan sunroof The front thrones are a pair seats, I found them comfortable. They were than I expected and were lacking support and to top it off, I them a bit slippery. The driver s is power adjustable.

I really enjoyed the feel of the wheel. It has a lot of work to do you can control the handsfree, media, cruise driver information screen and the two modes with it. Behind it is a pod basic gauges, separated by a screen with the trip and your fuel gauge.

In the center of dash is a small information display a crisp, 4.3-inch colour screen handles fuel economy, outside temperature, maintenance and other customizable settings). it is a larger 6.1-inch touchscreen manages your media, and phone functions. It works but isn t given the most user layout. It s also not the sharpest out there but that s not the biggest The voice recognition system is hemorrhoidal to use.

It s a 4-step to make a call, where manufacturers achieve the same in a single step. Subaru has a way to go with this technology.

The 8-speaker Harman Kardon system feeds off AM, FM, CD, auxiliary, USB and streaming sources and sounds Below it sits a dual-zone climate control system with three rotary

The center console is home to the button, the gear selector, a brake, two cupholders and an armrest.

surrounding the rear-view mirror, are two camera pods. They the EyeSight cameras, which a bunch of driver technology to the Pre-collision braking, pre-collision assist, pre-collision throttle adaptive cruise control, departure warning, lane warning and lead vehicle alert all come out of those cameras.

Thankfully, lane departure and collision warning can be turned off as can get a bit irritating in the city. Unfortunately are only buttons but no indicator to you ve turned them off no light, shows up on the screens.

Rear

The back seats are very and the rear passenger compartment equally spacious. Legroom and are excellent and things seem with the large panoramic The seats are lovely but there s else going on.

You get two map pockets and the middle seatback down to become an armrest a couple of cupholders. That s it. No air no charging plugs, nothing.

And I think that s a bit weak you re sneaking up on 40 grand.

Typical for cars, and no different here, the seating position is a drag for the fact that it straddles a on the floor doesn t help as anyone sitting there can t put feet in front of them.

All of our kids fit back there well, and there are two sets of anchors for their seats.

Up front, you get a reasonably sized compartment and door bins, s a convenient open drop-in bin a 12V plug below the center stack. I the carpeted bin under the armrest it houses auxiliary, USB and 12V plugs.

Old owners will be excited to there s a power liftgate. can be activated from the dash, key fob and on the trunk lid itself, and it can also be set to to 3/4 height for lower parkade

Subaru really raises the bar the cargo space 974 litres of greet you when you pop the trunk. The is appointed with a 12 V plug, tie downs and underfloor storage space for the included removable, tonneau cover).  The split rear seats convenient power releases, you to quickly fold either from the trunk — fold the down and you have a class-leading litre space.

The Drive

OK, let s get back to that CVT, we? Clearly the engine has what it on paper. Well, the CVT is nothing if not a partner for the turbo. Off the line, it s but snaps to attention with

Stand on it, and it winds out, rather high speeds than you d think possible for a big like this. During day driving, I found the transmission to be intelligent. It does take a or two to get to the right ratio if you punch it if you re in the I mode, which is basically driving. But that s where the SI come in. Put it in SI (Sport) mode, and the car s sharpens.

Choose the even radical S# (Sharp) mode for throttle sensitivity it veritably ahead at any speed, and downshifts than any automatic transmission. of, the CVT can be shifted manually the paddles  — in the S modes, simulated gears are found in a second. It s very impressive and it works!

Handling is simply for a vehicle this tall and Sure, the height of the Forester up there s roll around but it grips with absolute in every single driving The all-wheel drive is transparent basic driving, but it doesn t much for you to feel the difference. It is an system, and keeps the car feeling planted and in control.

Put the Forester the wringer, and there is no question it is shifting the power to the exact you need it. To call it confidence is an understatement. You can throw this SUV any curve or any corner and you know you re out of it just fine.

Though the suspension is very well soaking up big hits while wallowing around corners. I it to be a good balance. Not only but it allows you to head off the beaten

The Forester has 220 mm (8.7″) of clearance, more than of the SUVs that come to Pair that with a low-speed off-road mode, and you ve got an SUV of taking on some significant duties as well.

We found the excelled as a highway car as well. It quiet and the suspension is smooth and Braking is powerful and effective, and out of the car is excellent.

As capable as it is, the Forester up blurring all the things it does well together, because on top of all it s a fun car to drive! And that s a rarity in class.

Nitpicks/Details

At this I think the passenger seat be power adjustable. C mon, Much like the lack of for rear seat passengers, just comes across as

I giggled at what are probably the and possibly the narrowest, sun visors I ve seen they work fine but their dimensions take you for a surprise the first you fold them down.

A detail the sideview mirrors a bright LED light that through a Subaru logo in turn lights up the side of Forester when you unlock it at Love it!

The Verdict

As I said, the is an important part of Subaru s car It sells well, and it embodies key attributes of adventure and versatility, as as safety. I think they did  a job in improving virtually every of this vehicle.

When I a vehicle that is as happy to along city streets as it is to up mountain passes, fully with gear and a family, I get When it fits my family, and them a safe place to be on the I check off another box on my list. goes for reasonable fuel awesome cargo space, tech and the ability to head off on top of it all, it s fun!

I give the Subaru Forester an 8.5 out of 10. So s not to like?

Well, WAF (Wife Factor) was, sadly, not as as I d hoped. She wasn t a huge fan of the inside or out. And that a lot to her.

She admitted that it was a car to drive though, and she did love she could knock off an entire day at the and still have room over in the trunk.

If it were up to me, I be considering the new Subaru Forester to the place of our minivan. I highly it as a smart, practical and fun vehicle can do it all. I just need to the other boss in the house

A few prior to this review, I was to give the 2014 Forester a go in If you are interested in my adventures, check out here.
