Japanese car-maker s all-new crossover, the Subaru XV, enters the market with a class-leading ground clearance of 220mm, constant symmetrical all-wheel drive, boxer engine layout and excellent fuel economy for a vehicle of its size and segment. Of all its cars for sale, Subaru (which is renowned for producing race-track performance vehicles), has moved into a new era of reduced fuel consumption and SUV practicality. The new Subaru XV is a serious market alternative to Nissan’s Qashqai, Citroën’s new C4 Aircross, the Kia Sportage and Hyundai’s iX35.

The XV has a sporty and energetic overall look and features a number of typical Subaru design traits. It has a hexagonal shaped front grille and hawk-like styled Xenon headlights. The corners of the front and rear bumpers have been redesigned to enhance the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle.

Unique 17-inch alloys in dual tone (contrasting silver spokes and black surrounds) with high profile (225/55/17) rubber and housed in chunky black plastic wheel-arch trims gives the XV a distinct look and provides for excellent off-road capability. The Subaru XV comes in a striking new Tangerine Orange Pearl body colour but is also available in Satin White Pearl, Obsidian Black Pearl, Camellia Red Pearl, Ice Silver and Deep Cherry Pearl.

Inside is a spacious cabin with XV embroidered seats, a soft-touch dashboard and aluminium pedals. Subaru says that by moving the A-pillars forward, doors now open wider than before for easier entry and legroom for both front and rear passengers. Specifications are generous and include Bluetooth, iPod and USB connectivity and there is also a user-friendly touchscreen interface with an array of fuel efficiency and figure displays.

A sunroof is fitted as standard and has both tilt and slide options. Buy a car like this and you ll also get a reverse camera, a dual zone climate control system, cruise control, hill start assist and much more. Slightly disappointing is a rather extensive use of plastic inside, despite the soft-touch dash.

Seat adjustment levers are manual rather than electric which may not be to everyone s taste.

The XV comes with the new generation boxer 4 engine. It is not turbocharged for power but rather naturally aspirated and designed for optimum fuel efficiency. The XV s two-litre, four-cylinder DOHC petrol engine produces 110 kW of power at 6200 rpm and 196 Nm of torque at 4200 rpm. The engine has a number of design features, including a more compact combustion chamber, enhanced intake ports and valves, optimised injector positions and lighter pistons and connecting rods. Power is pushed to the wheels either through a six-speed manual transmission or a Lineartronic CVT.

In the CVT variant, the paddle type shifters are located on either side of the steering wheel. Fuel consumption is quoted at 7 litres per 100 km which is impressive considering the XV has a petrol powerplant and is a fairly substantially sized car with symmetrical all-wheel drive.

With safety in mind: Front airbags, available front-side and curtain airbags, active front headrests and 3-point seatbelts help protect occupants directly. The new Subaru XV has a 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating with ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Programme) and ENCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme). In addition, of all cars for sale, Subaru is the only manufacturer to score the highest safety rating on every car in their model line-up with the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), for the past 3 years in a row.

The Subaru XV may look sportier than what it actually is, but then it is a very economical car to drive. This superb AWD vehicle is at home both off-road and on-road and provides a comfortable fuel-efficient alternative to its many gas guzzling competitors in this segment. Pricing starts at around R329 000 for the 2.0 XV Manual and R339 000 for the 2.0 CVT and includes a full maintenance plan of 3 years or 75 000 km, and warranty of 3 years or 100 000 km. (Prices are subject to change according to various factors, so please consult your dealer for the latest price.)
