XV Crosstrek Hybrid Is Subaru Prepared To Take On The Prius Heads On?

More than a decade ago, Toyota has managed to pull off an incredible feat of strength for the United States markets: the successful introduction of the hybrid on the car-buying charts of a sophisticated audience. However, during this time the rest of the automakers stood quietly on the sidelines, observed, learned and weighed their options very carefully.

While the result of some automakers efforts in this niche has yet to appear, a bold Japanese car manufacturer has decided to take the notorious Prius head on. Let’s take a closer look at the newly launched XV Crosstrek . which constitutes Subaru s version of a hybrid recently launched at the New York auto show this year.

A combination of old and new

In all fairness, the technology behind the Crosstrek hybrid is very similar to what you can find on all mainstream automobiles in this niche. The gasoline engine is nice, but doesn t really outperform what you can commonly see in other hybrids. Essentially, the Crosstrek comes with a 2.0L, 148 hp and 145 lb of torque internal-combustion engine augmented by a 13 hp, 48 lb of torque electric engine.

However, the similarities to the old hybrid technologies stop here.

The electric engine of the Subaru model is designed to operate with a continuously variable transmission, whereas the gas engine s output is a duplicate of the Crosstrek launched last year. Furthermore, Subaru decided to take the electric engine to the next level and replaced the standard lithium-ion batteries with a 13.5 KW nickel battery pack. Nonetheless, that is all Subaru has revealed about their battery pack output so far.

As far as the gasoline engine is concerned, it is necessary to mention that the automaker has done an outstanding job at respecting the fuel economy trends; the new hybrid will consume on average 34 mpg on the highway and, thanks to their innovative stop-start system, only 24 mpg in the city.

The Crosstrek is rather chubby

As expected, the hybrid version is heavier than its Crosstrek gasoline counterpart, but only by approximately 300 pounds. However, the extra weight does not come from the battery pack as you might assume, but rather from the noise suppression technology integrated by Subaru. In addition to the standard acoustic insulation for the floor, the vehicle features extra cushioning under the rear seats.

It is important to note that road tests conducted so far indicate that Subaru s engineers have tweaked the suspension system in accordance to the mass of the automobile. Moreover, the steering system has also undergone some modifications to ensure the same responsiveness Subaru fans are accustomed to. On the other hand, while passengers can enjoy a smooth, quiet drive, they will have limited space for stretching their legs, less than one cubic foot to be more exact.

Crosstrek is not prepared for the challenge

Except for the electric motor and urban fuel efficiency system, Subaru didn t really offer hybrid fans much to awe about. In fact, even the exterior didn t suffer any significant changes from the gasoline Crosstrek, excluding the aluminum wheels that are standard with this model.  But who knows, perhaps the $22,790 estimated price could tempt some socially responsible customers!
