Electric Suzuki Swift attracts plenty of interest from new car buyers at the 2013 Canberra Electric Vehicle Festival

Why did an Electric Suzuki Swift attract plenty of interest from new car buyers at the 2013 Canberra Electric Vehicle Festival?

Electric Suzuki Swift looks like a normal car from the outside.

During the 2013 Canberra Electric Vehicle Festival, a number of people approached me as they were interested in buying an Electric Car. What a lot of them had in mind were brand new Electric Cars. I lost count of how many people approached me. Unfortunately, due to lack of official representation from any of the OEM car makers, I was unable to refer any of them to an Established car maker.

In fact, at the time, one could have forgiven me for not knowing if some of these established car makers were still making Electric Cars or not.

Thank fully, I was able to refer people to Suzi Auto who had on display a very nice Electric Suzuki Swift.

What was special about this Electric Suzuki Swift?

There were a few things special about this Electric Suzuki Swift:

It was very sporty with racing seats and racing steering wheel. It looked the part and being a car that has been competitively involved in motorsport events and yet still used as a daily driver, it is a testament to not only its performance, but its durability.

Although the donor car is over 20 years old, the car is in excellent condition, hence, a viable alternative to a brand new car.

The Electric Car Conversion was done using off the shelf parts that are available to members of the public. In fact, if you have a Suzuki Swift from the late 80 s/ early 90 s, you can purchase an Electric Car Conversion kit from Suzi Auto for this car. Suzi Auto can also provide parts for other cars of a similar size and weight.

What parts were used in this Electric Car Conversion?

This Electric Car used a 1991 Suzuki Swift donor car. It retained the factory 5 speed gearbox. It had racing seats and a racing steering wheel. Technical details about the conversion are:

Drive dynamics:

Range: up to 55km (note: road conditions and traffic conditions influence range)

Top Speed: 100km/h (62mph)

Charger: a generic charger set to 6 amps

Charge time: 4 hours

Electric Motor:

Type: Series Wound DC Motor.

Voltage: 96 volts

Continuous Power: 8.5kw (11.4hp)

Peak Power (estimated): 68kw to 85kw (114hp)

RPM: 2800

Motor Controller:

Type (Chemistry): Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)

Quantity:  32

Amp hour rating: 100Ah

Bugatti Electric Cars

Battery Management System (BMS): Elite Power Solutions.

Heater: 12 volt system (probably a modified hair dryer).

What are the costs?

Suzi Auto used to do a number of Electric Car Conversions . but due strong demand and not enough workshop space, Suzi Auto focus on selling Electric Conversion kits and providing support for people and mechanics doing the Electric Car Conversions . This car cost around $14,500 to convert which included the cost of batteries and donor car. This did not include labor costs. (Obviously, it excludes the cost of the racing seats, racing steering wheel and other race bits).

Components included in the kit are:

Electric Motor

Adapter plate

Vacuum pump

Pot box

various other bits

In Australia, this is very price competitive option considering if you have a Suzuki Swift like this one, most of the parts will bolt in quite easily. Also, you can still get Suzuki Swift GA donor cars very easily in Australia. These cars were also sold as a Holden Barina (in the late 1980s to early 1990s) in Australia, a Geo Metro in other markets and Maruti in India.

With such a simple and clean electric conversion, it is no surprise that this Electric Car attracted a lot of interest and is seen as a viable alternative to buying a brand new car, especially, when it is used as a run about around town.
