Tesla Model S Review

We at TotalHTPC are technology enthusiasts. And this site is dedicated to entertainment technology and helping our cut the cord, we are, in the end, enthusiasts. As such, when we got our on probably the most talked piece of technology during the year, a spanking new, racing green, 85 Kw kWh Tesla S, could you really expect us NOT to it?

We thought so, and so dear readers, you go .

Ordering and Delivery

Tesla a new way to buy a car , and for the most part, that was true. Ordering was a snap, and very easy. Select battery (45 Kw kWh, 60 Kw kWh or 85 Kw kWh), colors (exterior and interior), and options, enter your card for the down payment and Ordering went off, for the part, without a hitch.

On the hand, delivery was, in a word, a clusterf k.

Two weeks to delivery, I received an email, cc d on was my assigned Delivery Specialist . Let s him Jim. I never heard Jim. A week went by, and a week to go until scheduled , I was anxious. After placing calls to the gentlemen who had handed me off to I received a call from a Delivery Specialist, let s call him .

John and I arranged for a time for the car to be (pickup is only available in elsewhere, buyers are charged for the car to be delivered via flatbed truck or equivalent to any location with an or so of training by the delivering specialist I was by multiple readers that all are charged this destination One day before the car was to be delivered, I received a from Delivery Specialist #3, let s him Dan . Dan informed me that John had reassigned to another delivery, and Dan be delivering my car.

A quick About a month prior to the car I called Tesla asking how I should set up my garage to charge the Tesla informed me that the powered wall connector , enables the car, rated at a of 270 miles under normal , to be charged in 4 hours, were ordered, and as such, install a 6-50 plug which can and quickly be converted to support the powered wall connector its available.

As such, I had my electrician install the 6-50. Fast forward to who now, a day prior to the car being informs me that the Nema adapter is not available, and as such, I have to plug the car into a 110v outlet, which the car at a rate of 2-3 miles per hour. Uh Oh.

No though says Dan, the car be fully charged upon or will it .

Delivery Day

At 8am, I a call from Dan saying he s a bit late, and the 9am scheduled time likely be 9:20am. Knowing Dan is from NJ to Westchester County NY, I traffic was inevitable. At 8:30am I Dan a simple, how s traffic . No response.

the next 45 minutes, I text and Dan to no avail, he s not responding. Worried, pissed, more pissed worried), I call John, Specialist #2 who picks up. Upset, I ask why Dan isn t responding. John doesn t but promises to call Dan and find A few minutes later John back, telling me Dan is 5-10 away .

At 9:50am, Dan finally the car up my driveway. I m pretty hot at this Why pick up the phone for John and not me? No good response. Moving on I the car has plates, which I specifically wasn t required as I was transferring from my old car. Minor but then I notice there s no sticker on the car. Where s the sticker? I ask Dan. Dan informs me he was this morning prior to for my home when he noticed the of an inspection sticker. Why didn t you me that when we spoke morning so I could schedule an I furiously asked Dan, that Dan knew I had turned in my car the day before, and the Model S was to be my sole

Shrugs and apologies ensued. Isn t it to sell a new car without an inspection? I ask and then Dan s colleague from who Dan called and I spoke with the same question. Yes , is the response I get the Tesla employee on the phone, it is to sell a new car without an inspection. in the car, I also notice the car is 75% charged, Why isn t the car fully charged? I ask Another shrug, another Two hours later, after phone calls, I find a auto shop to conduct the for $10 given it s an all electric car no emissions required. Now in fairness, Tesla did another, fourth Delivery physically drive up a Nema that afternoon, but overall, my experience, the delivery experience is

No one called days in advance to anything. While I am sure is some checklist Delivery are instructed to follow, none was in case. Fortunately, the car makes up for it.

The Car

The car in my opinion, is gorgeous. Sleek tons of room, and mostly thought through. Its also only a few inches shorter a base BMW 750. Driving the car is an like no other car I ve ever

Acceleration from a standing is amazing but what really the car apart is passing power. 40mph to 70mph feels it happens instantaneously, like on a roller coaster when you take off. It happens so you don t realize how fast you are going tickets are a real concern driving this car. The and passengers alike are thrust into their seats, is instant when you mash the gas accelerator. In a word, its exhilarating.

is amazingly precise, thanks to the natural, low center of gravity. The can also adjust the handling comfort, standard and sport modes. The seats are generally (more on that later) and is an absolute ton of room.

Now let s get to specifics.

The Good

Beyond the and handling, the basic functions of a the technology is ridiculous, and yet, as I below, there is a surprising of standard tech available on s gas-powered luxury cars is shockingly absent. The central panel is in short, fantastic. response is immediate, no visual easy to reach, its great.

And as you can see in the below, its customizable. Rather write about all that s in this car, only a will really do it justice.

great is the iPhone /Android that allows you to do everything but on the car, including warming it up to try to some of that lost as a result of sitting, unplugged, in the (more on that later). See the below. The location screen, not brings up the iOS Map screen with a dot where you are, and a red arrow the car is, and can provide directions to get from you to the

Like everything in the car s display s, the iOS also match the color and on your actual car.

The Bad

The morning I went to drive the car charging overnight the charging wouldn t release from the Two calls into the Ownership line (the first sent me to voicemail telling me I d get a call and a gentleman kindly walked me a soft reset of both the touch screen as well as the display. What Dan, my Specialist didn t tell me is one needs to press AND HOLD the on the charging port, push in and pull out.

Simply and releasing the button before the port can confuse the car.

The aren t great. They cool, but are too narrow, and don t have forward padding. The result is if you your head back, you your head slipping one side or another, and if you don t lean I found that simply the seat more upright t yield a comfortable back

Unfortunately, Tesla takes a nod strategic partner Mercedes, in the steering column literally the cruise controls, and is too close to the turn signal, on which is the wiper functionality, which is hidden as a result of the very steering wheel.

While the package is impressive, here s a list of absent tech found in other, high end cars: heated sideview proximity/parking sensors, and blind assist. The car with the telematics comes with 3G, but no 4G, and while the car has hardware built in according to the software isn t ready to handle it. given the connectivity, there is no to use the car as a hotspot.

Additionally, while the connectivity to my iPhone worked on the music side, there is no way to browse the music on the phone, skip to the next song. Also, when navigation is on the center console, there is no way to the marker to always face up happens on the driver display is something Dan mentioned Tesla was on as well.

Additionally, using the and air conditioning (especially this) is a battery drain, yet Dan and a Tesla rep on the Experience line indicated the seat warmers don t use nearly as power. If so, why didn t Tesla back seat heat standard, as well as footwell using the same electric method? Doesn t solve the A/C but does address cold use and possibly the cold weather drain issue (more on below).

There is also no steering wheel, another in my opinion.

Another additional I feel Tesla overlooked, given their partnership Mercedes: no ability to fold back seats from the (which all Mercedes SUVs The Tesla has an amazing trunk frunk) space, but to get all that including the room when the seats are folded down, one do so from the back seat A small inconvenience, but one that have been better through.

Another small no hooks for clothing or laundry in the seat ceiling silly in my opinion.

Finally, one comment on the Energy screen. As seen in the picture the left hand axis the watts/mi usage, while the represents the remaining range on driving at that instant is different than rated Problem is, naturally, if one sees a go higher, the assumption is more not so, because higher watts/mi on the left axis means range.

So users must get to the fact that when the read is BELOW the solid range line, that remaining range is HIGHER rated range, and vica and if the dotted horizontal average (in this case your expected remaining range upon the last 15 miles), is the solid horizontal rated line, that means you to get LESS than the rated reading on your driver an odd quirk, but one that can be overcome.

The

The weather, cold weather in could be the Achilles heal of car, although I m told is working on it. Rated range is based not only on driving but also on the battery itself. If the is cold, and all batteries, in order to optimally must be kept an ideal temperature range, the range is reduced by the amount of the car requires to heat up the battery to ideal temperature range. The to the battery has been mixed. On a 26-degree day, I saw the car lose as as 7 miles/hour in rated range just sitting there, while on other, more days its only lost 1-2 of rated range.

One Tesla rep the Owner Experience line upon my asking, that the car at JFK Airport, during the cold for even up to 24 hours, going on a and returning could leave you a dead car. Yes, are safety measures the car goes when the battery gets but the rep did not recommend leaving the car at the airport for 48 hours during winter. He the company is working on this, to it being a calculation error than a functional one, but in the he didn t recommend leaving the car not plugged in, for any extended period of

On another day, I called the Experience line again, the same question. This a helpful woman who owned an S in said just the opposite, based on her personal experience and how many Roadster customers left their cars for weeks at a time without although I failed to clarify if was in cold weather. I ll certainly an eye on this and report back in an

Summary

The Model S is a blast to and is far head of the pack in terms of technology. While range is than adequate for a daily use and even some longer ( plus the Supercharger network is free of charge to all 85Kw and owners who purchase the twin add-on, Correction, free is available to all owners with an 85 kWh and those 60 kWh battery owners purchase the seperate supercharging range anxiety is limited, not completely removed because planning for long trips is than with a standard gas No question its a game changer. But its not and while the absent technology and creature comforts are generally to incorporate going forward, the weather battery issue to be addressed, and quickly, if Tesla is to conquer the gas powered market.

I ll back in six months or so after I ve had the to drive the car more, and update my
