Tesla Model S vs. BMW i3 Comparison Drive

By Jeff Southern

I always been an auto  Recent, I have become an vehicle enthusiast.  I spent a year from July of until May of 2013 restoring a VW Thing and converting it to electric  You can see my work and the car at www.EVThing.me .

The is a great car for cursing around on nice days and frequenting car  I absolutely love owning and the car.  After driving car for a few months I knew that I to also own a modern electric with more creature  I work in sales and have a territory that is roughly a 50 radius of Atlanta GA.

I have to a mileage log, so I know my driving habits quite

I drove a Nissan Leaf, but that the range was not suitable for my needs. It was close.  I also the Chevy Volt which work for my primary vehicle, but I a vehicle with more range.  At the time, the Tesla S was my only option with range to cover my daily needs.

 So, I scheduled a test

Driving the Tesla Model S

I test drove the Tesla S on July 14th.  I found the car to be an vehicle with only a of issues for me.  It was a quiet, fast car excellent handling.  It is a large with plenty of cargo and seating for five adults. I am almost 50 years old, tall, about 230 lbs and have a bad

I found the low slung Tesla S difficult to get in and out of.  I also noticed I had limited visibility out of the windshield.  I have to lean forward and up to see traffic lights and overhead signs.  I also notice my head hit the headliner in the back of the Model S.  My head also brushed the head liner in the seat.

I am not sure the seat was all the way although I did try to get it down as low as possible. the Model S is a large sedan, I though there would be room inside the car.

I recently owned a 2008 Corvette that had similar  It was not a deal breaker for the Corvette as I it for four years and enjoyed the  However the Model S would be a to $90,000 car and I just would not wanted to live with annoyances in such an expensive

However I did like the driving of the Model S, so I put a deposit down on a Model X thinking it would be more comfortable for me.

The New Kid On The Block BMW i3

afterwards, I began reading and more about the new BMW i3.  The one the Range Extender seemed interesting to me and would cover 90-95% of my driving needs on drive, and the REx could handle the of the time I need an extra 5 to 20 miles of range.  On November 6th I was to get a test drive in the BMW i3 here in

My first impression was “I’ll fit it that thing”.  (Which is since I actually own a Thing). when I got inside I was quite at how much room it had.  I had of head, shoulder and leg room. telescoping steering column had a deal of travel.  It is a feature really helps tall find a comfortable driving

I also noticed that I had vision out of the vehicle in all directions.

I got in the back seat.  I was again to have more than headroom.  With the driver all the way back, the leg room was quite but I as able to move the seat up a and still found a comfortable position that also me to sit comfortably in the back seat.  I did test because I need to be to carry three adults in my car if I to used it as my company vehicle. as we carry our clients out to lunch.  I this vehicle would be for that role.

In summary,  I found the i3 to be more for me than the Model S due to the ease of the upright seating position and better all around visibility.

Tesla Model S

my test drive, my wife, who is 5’2”, quickly snuggled into the i3’s driver and found what she described as a driving position for her.  I can you that it is rare for both of us to a comfortable driving positions in any car due to the difference in our physical size.

On the drive, I was impressed with the quickness.  It is not Model S fast, but quick.  The i3 is smooth, and has solid performance.

The is what you would expect a lightweight BMW. It is quick, and well balanced.  Of course it s not an M3 or a but still a joy to drive.

Just my EVThing, it actually makes in traffic a pleasure.

I know some people do not the look of the i3, but I find its styling to be  To me, It looks different and futuristic. I like the interior.  For a small vehicle it is amazing how usable space this has.

There are useful cubby holes to hold all of items.  The trunk is a small, basically a big cube.  I carry some demo around with me and the shape of the is well suited to rectangular cases. The height of the cargo is IDEAL for people like me a bad back.

It would also be to hold a weeks worth of (as the wife pointed out).  If you the back seats there is a solid cargo area for larger items like a 50” LCD TV.

One Would I Buy?

Just our test drive, the wife and I agreed (also rare) this will be our next  I would have ordered one on the if they were taking in the U.S. at this time.  I to get one as soon as they are available year.

If it turns out be be as good as I think it is, I request a refund of my Model X  I am sure that the Model X be an excellent vehicle, but I think the i3 is as great and it is about half the and well suited to my needs and comfortable . and fun to drive.
