Electrifying Toyota Rav4

Toyota admits its electric Rav4 EV could have been more successful than it was, with only 1,500 units delivered since its introduction in 1997 (half of which remain in use), but it also knows the dynamics of power sources have changed since then and an updated version might be more successful in today’s market.

“Price and convenience proved to be critical success factors and they remain so today,” said Jim Lentz, president and chief operating officer, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. “But much has changed in the last few years. Most importantly, the growing level of awareness that sustainable mobility will come at a cost that must be shared by the automakers, government and the consumer.”

Hence, the second-generation introduced at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. The company is planning to start off with 35 units through 2011 for demonstration and evaluation purposes, aiming for a production vehicle in 2012.

The 2011 Rav4 EV uses electric components supplied by recently acquired company Tesla (a company that specializes in electric vehicles), while Toyota insured the design and integration of the components. The vehicle will be built at the Rav4 facility in Woodstock, Ontario.

Toyota is aiming for a driving range of 160 kilometres in real world climates and conditions, with a lithium metal oxide battery with a usable output in the 30 kW hour range. And it’s also aiming to make the drive characteristics as close as possible to the regular Rav4. However, all those final decisions for the 2012 model will be made after the evaluation program.

“From the beginning, he customer experience has been the focus,” said Lentz. “In other words, how do we deliver an unconventional product to mainstream customers that is compelling and affordable and that offers an acceptable level of daily convenience.”

The demonstration vehicle can reportedly accelerate as quickly as the current Rav4 V6 model and weighs about 100 kg more, resulting in significant changes to the steering and suspension and an overall change in packaging to balance the load out.

The Rav4 EV is immediately recognizable as a Rav4 despite changes to the front end, most notably the absence of a grille and slightly modified headlights. Cosmetic changes such as unique exterior paint, custom seat trim and dash metres highlight the interior amendments that also include multimedia displays and a push-button transmission (since electric motors are usually on or off, with changes in rpm, and hence speed, dictated by the “throttle”). The transformation did not affect interior volume, with the electric Rav4 maintaining the 2,074 litre cargo area (about 73 cubic feet) with rear seats folded.

Toyota has also announced that when the Rav4 EV consumer model launches in 2012, it will be joined by the Prius plug-in hybrid and a small EV commuter vehicle, as well as seven all-new hybrid models.
