Tesla-Toyota electric RAV4 unveiled, priced at $50,610

UPDATE 5:03 ET. Pricing updated to include mandatory shipping charge.

Toyota USA unveiled the all-electric RAV4 production model with Tesla powertrain in Los Angeles today and also announced the small SUV will have a sticker price of $49,800 plus $810 shipping — or $50,610 out the door we’ve now confirmed.

The RAV4 EV made its debut of the annual Electric Vehicle Symposium — Chris is there and will update with RAV4 information from the event.

The vehicle goes on sale late summer in the California markets of Sacramento, San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles/Orange County and San Diego and Toyota says it has planned for sales of just 2,600 vehicles over the next three years.

We believe that the RAV4 EV will attract sophisticated early technology adopters, much like the first-generation Prius, said Bob Carter, Toyota division group vice president and general manager, in a statement. It’s designed for consumers who prioritize the environment and appreciate performance. We look forward to seeing how the market responds.

Toyota in its announcement release said the battery SUV is expected to have a range rating of about 100 miles and a charge time of about six hours on a 240-volt, 40-amp charger. It also said that driving performance, dynamics and cargo space would approximate the gas model. The battery warranty is for eight years or 100,000 miles.

The production model comes in just under two years since the announcement that Toyota and Tesla would collaborate on an electric RAV4, with the motor, battery and electronics by Tesla. It will be built by Toyota alongside production of conventional RAV4 at the Woodstock plant in Canada.

The RAV4 EV is front-drive-only and has a powertrain that puts out 154 hp. It has two driving modes: Sport, which features 0-60 mph in 7.0 seconds and a top speed of 100 mph, and Normal, which extends the 0-60 time to 8.6 seconds and cuts the top to 85 mph, but offers greater range. The lighting in the instrument pod glows red in Sport, blue in Normal. (Are we at Drive On the only ones who think cutesy biofeedback in EVs and hybrids has jumped the shark?)

Bodywork modifications that cut the coefficient of drag to 0.30 Cd — which Toyota claims is the lowest of any SUV in the world — include a redone front bumper, upper and lower grille, side mirrors, rear spoiler and underbody design.

Other exterior differences from the gasoline RAV4 include LED low-beam projector headlights and halogen projector high beams, LED daytime running lights and LED taillights.

Inside, the EV gets its own fabric and color, heated seats and a touch-screen with three years of Toyota’s new Entune infotainment system. Its total cargo capacity is 73 cu. ft. same as the conventional RAV4 with no loss for the battery pack or other electrical parts.

Toyota’s approved supplier for owners to go to for a 240-volt electric charger is Leviton. The EV comes with a 120-volt emergency charging cable for when the recommended (240-volt) charging is not available.
