Toyota to roll out small all-electric car

Thursday, September 4, 2008, 13:36 by Auto Correspondent

The next decade will see Japanese automotive behemoth Toyota unveiling its small all-electric car. This will in fact mark the car makers second try in the field of all electric vehicles, after it had experimented with the idea a few years ago.

Toyota already is the leader in the gas-electric hybrid market with the Toyota Prius.

Toyota President katsuaki Watanabe said that the proposed all-electric car from Toyota would be mass-produced in 2010. There were no further details forthcoming. Many expect that this would be al electric version of the iQ, but so far they are just rumors.

Toyota s battery-only car will likely be a small, urban commuter vehicle, spokeswoman Jana Hartline said.

With the car maker already in the forefront with its gas-electric hybrid models, this time around it is believed that Toyota will make it big with the planned foray into all-electric space. The buzz is that people who advocate electric vehicles are also of the opinion that Toyota should get back at its efforts in building an all-electric vehicle.

Currently, Toyota is testing several plug-in versions of the Prius in the US. If Toyota s all-electric car is launched in 2010, it would be in dealerships at the same time as the much anticipated Chevrolet Volt.

With company top brass already going public with such a plan, it is only certain than the next ten years would be a challenging period for the company as he world would keenly be noting whatever the car maer does in the all-electric vehicle experiments. Toyota has not released any details of its proposed electric car. It is however expected that the company would release details of the project shortly.

Toyota, incidentally, may not be alone in this space as two other Japanese majors too have announced that they also will be manufacturing electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, Toyota has said that the early versions of its plug-in hybrid, which will be based of the successful Prius, will be made available only to fleet operators like corporations and municipalities. The company has also said that it will begin leasing its new fuel cell hybrid vehicle model, the Toyota Fchv-adv, to Japan s Ministry of the Environment.

It is expected that the model might as well be leased to other national government entities, local governments and companies in or related to the energy industry.  As per details available, lease terms would be 840,000 Japanese yen a month for a period of 30 months. This move has also made Toyota the world s first automaker to commercialize a fuel cell vehicle.
