Toyota Auris Goes Green With New HSD

Brace yourself for more hybrid-based eco-worthiness from Toyota. Yes, from the same people who brought you the iconic Prius hybrid, Toyota now bring you the super-frugal Auris HSD (hybrid synergy drive). The all-new Auris was recently launched in South Africa and now the HSD joins the C-segment family to top off the range.

Built in the UK, the Auris HSD offers class-leading emissions of just 87 g/km, virtually no nitrogen oxide (NOx) or particulate matter and Toyota say the new Auris Hybrid delivers significant cost of ownership benefits thanks to no CO2 tax and reduced service charges.

The Auris HSD shares the same dynamic exterior styling and extensive interior re-modelling introduced on the new Auris, however, the XS trim and high-grade XR models incorporate unique detailing to identify them as a flagships.

The grille and lower rear diffuser is finished in graphite metallic paint, while the Toyota bonnet and tailgate logos are in hybrid blue. There are hybrid logos on the front wings and a hybrid mark on the tailgate. As in all other HSD iterations, the rear tail lamps incorporate hybrid-only LED lights.

Both 15-inch (XS) and 17-inch (XR) alloy wheels are unique to the Auris HSD.

A repackaging of the battery pack under the rear seat means that luggage capacity is now equivalent to that of the 360-litres of other models. The Auris HSD has an exclusive Eco Drive monitor within the driver’s instrument binnacle and a hybrid, blue, gear lever.

Toyota’s Auris HSD powertrain, boasts an electric motor which generates torque of 207 Nm, which is supplemental to the 142 Nm generated by the 1.8-litre petrol engine. The HSD’s 1.8 litre VVT-i petrol engine and electric motor generate a maximum power output of 100 kW, equipping the Auris HSD with a 0 100 km/h sprint time of 10.9 seconds and onto a maximum speed of 180 km/h.

The Auris HSD’s powertrain is designed to eliminate the need for the petrol engine as often as possible during city driving. Advanced engine technologies include a cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system and an electric water pump.

The Auris HSD also offers Simple Intelligent Park Assist (SIPA), fitted as standard on both XS and XR variants, the new Auris HSD can park itself. In keeping with the Hybrid’s elevated status in the model range, both models receive a front spoiler, daytime running lights as well as front fog lights. XR models are further enhanced by a panoramic glass roof.
