Toyota Shows Off Yaris Hybrid-R Concept

Over the past couple of months, Toyota has released multiple teasers about the new Toyota Yaris concept. The excitement for this vehicle comes from the Hybrid-R powertrain concept featured in this futuristic three-door Yaris. This week, carmakers from all over the globe met at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show to show off their new concepts for the future of the auto industry.

Toyota continues to invest in the changing world by devoting their time and effort into more advanced hybrid vehicles.

Hype of the Toyota Hybrid-R

Toyota says that this particular version of the hybrid battery has the power to be more rapidly absorbed and discharged than in a traditional battery system.  Paul Horrell, correspondent for the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph . explained that the Yaris R concept “uses a 1.6 liter turbo engine to drive the front wheels.  Each rear wheel then has its own 60 horsepower electric motor, so the total power of this hybrid is approximately 414 horsepower.  The energy harvested during braking doesn’t go into a battery as in Toyota’s regular hybrids, but into a super capacitor bank.”   These extra electric motors perform as generators during braking and feed a super capacitor located under the seat.

Also, there is a third 60 horsepower electric motor located between the engine and the 6-speed sequential gearbox that operates as a generator in two different conditions during deceleration to recharge the super capacitor and during acceleration to directly supply power for the rear electric motors.

Not only is this Yaris Hybrid concept model equipped with power but also the speed of the vehicle is reflected in its sporty racing exterior design and its equally sporty interior design. Inside you will find Recaro seats, Alcantara trimmed door panels and dashboard as well as an ideally located sequential shifter.  This vehicle also has two modes:  “road” and “track”.  Road mode was engineered for everyday life in the city with traffic and frequents stop.

The total power of the electric motors is limited and can operate on full electric mode for short distances and the daily adventures of parking.  This comes as no surprise as Toyota’s hybrid models in the past few years have adapted a full electric mode similar to this.  The track mode, however, will max out the hybrid powertrain by taking the engine up to 300 horsepower.  At low speeds or curves, the third electric motor can directly power the rear motors when the engine power exceeds the potential front wheel grip.

Rounding a turn will be controlled by the two electric motors at the back, which function independently.

There are many exciting things to look forward to from Toyota, especially as the leader in hybrid technology.  This will only expand and continue. While the 414hp Yaris hybrid concept is still just a concept, Brent Brown Toyota currently has a great selection of new Toyota cars, truck and SUVs including the first of all the hybrids, the Prius.  You can check out a Prius, Yaris, or even a new Corolla on our website at Brent Brown Toyota.

We look forward to showing you the future of automotive technology available today in every Toyota at Brent Brown Toyota!
