The Toyota Auris had big shoes to fill when it first hit the market in 2007. It was designed to step in and take the place of the epoch-spanning Toyota Corolla, which was of course one of the key vehicles that secured its manufacturer’s ongoing success.

Unlike the Corolla, the Auris was launched without any saloon or estate iteration in its stable, instead sticking with a simple family hatchback design that could be picked up with either three or five doors.

While a 1.4 litre petrol engine was available on all basic Auris options, Toyota chose to cap the range with the 2.2 litre diesel engine of the T180.

A new 1.3 litre petrol powerplant was introduced in 2009, offering better fuel economy and also adding an automatic cut-off and restart feature which helps to avoid unnecessary consumption when you’re stuck in traffic.

In 2010 the approved used Toyota Auris received a major update, including plenty of technical changes and a visual face lift to give it a better chance of competing in an increasingly tough market.

The powerful diesel was scrapped and in its place a hybrid Auris was introduced, giving buyers an alternative to Toyota’s Prius, which uses exactly the same combo of petrol and electric power to increase its efficiency.

We’ve now seen this revised Auris also hit the end of the line as a new model is destined for launch in 2013. As such it’s probably a good time to scout out the used market for a bargain, because this range has become something of an underappreciated gem.

Bang for your buck

The used Toyota Auris may be a hatchback that’s compact and easy to drive on urban roads, but it’s also surprisingly spacious and comfortable on the inside.

It’s got a longer wheelbase than its closest rivals, allowing more room for passengers than you’ll find on alternatives like the Ford Focus.

You get storage spaces throughout the cabin, an appealingly designed centre console and lots of hard wearing materials so that family use doesn’t take its toll too quickly.

For the face lifted model, Toyota gave the design a more European feel, so it’s basically a bit more stylish. The suspension system was also altered to give it a better chance of providing a smooth ride on the UK’s notoriously poorly maintained roads.

A big boot, fold flat rear seats and a simple floor arrangement help to seat five adults and pack in plenty of luggage without a problem.

What you’ll pay

If you’re looking for the Toyota Auris for sale in its three door form then you’ll have less choice, because Toyota saw most of its sales from the five door format.

The pre-2010 models start at around £4000 to £5000, while face lifted options can be snapped up for as little as £7000 if you shop carefully. If you’re after the hybrid version, prices start from £11,000 and you can start bragging about your green motoring credentials.

The relatively sluggish sales and lack of consumer interest in the Auris mean that asking prices for used models are surprisingly affordable.

What to check

Aside from the obvious aesthetic damage that can occur inside and out, there’s very little to cause concern when it comes to reliability of the Auris.

Many used models will still be under warranty, so check for full service histories all round. Mechanically this is just as reliable, if not more so, than the Corolla range it replaced.

The reliability of the Auris is worth bearing in mind when you consider the slightly higher asking price of its replacement parts. The clutch is £150 to replace, while it’s closer to £400 for the exhaust.

Since very little is likely to go wrong with the Auris, you won’t be forced to spend cash on repairs particularly regularly, especially if you keep up with services.

How it drives

Toyota has gone for efficiency and economy with the range of engines available on the Auris, so don’t expect to have your socks blown off by performance, even in the faster 2.2 litre diesel model.

What you get in terms of passenger comfort and family-friendly features will help to endear the Auris to you over those long miles on the road.
