2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid: A Look

Though there have been continuous rumors about the coming of this vehicle, it does not mean that people have been able to comprehend fully the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid . which was revealed for the first time at the Auto Show in Detroit . Another fuel efficient version of the Jetta is also available, which operates on diesel, which is the preferred alternative offered to the customers, provided they do not want to go for the hybrid vehicle. This might be generating a feeling that Volkswagen is competing internally. However, this could be a part of the comprehensive strategy that the company has prepared to ensure that it can dominate the auto segment across the globe.

Latest Turbo Four:

The 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid has been designed to offer some very good numbers. It gets its power from the latest 1.4L turbocharged four cylinder engine. The engine has been changed to such an extent that even Volkswagen has not been able to elaborate about it in detail except for declaring the fact that it is going to be vastly different from its naturally aspirated, 1.4L twin-charged engines that are presently being provided in the European market. This engine has the capacity of producing peak power and torque figures of 150Hp and 184lb-ft respectively.

This engine has been coupled to an electric motor that generates a further 27Hp. The two engines combine to give an output of 170Hp and have been mated to a DSG transmission having seven speed gears. It is, therefore, the first hybrid that is making use of the dual-clutch automatic.

The electric motor gets its supply from a battery pack of 1.1kWh, which has been fit behind the car’s rear seat. This unit, which is fan cooled, is considerably light, weighing less than 80lbs.

Just like the other hybrids that Volkswagen has designed, the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid also makes use of a clutch for decoupling its gas engine from its drive-train. This allows the engine of the car to switch off allowing it to move on electricity, in which it is able to generate a peak speed of 84mph. The driver has been given the option of choosing the only electrically operated E-mode using a button that has been provided next to its shift lever.

This forced propulsion, without making use of gas, generates a peak speed of 44mph and is restricted to a distance of 1.2 miles.

Other Specifications:

All these technicalities would not be important to common consumers unless they perceive the maximum benefit out of it, which is going to be in terms of fuel efficiency that this car displays. As far figures released by Volkswagen . the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid achieves a combined rating of 45mpg as per EPA. This exceeds the 44mpg scored by the 2012 hybrid Honda Civic.

The diesel variant of the Jetta has a combined score of 34mpg (30mpg in city roads/42mpg on highways).

However, the effort of Volkswagen is not just restricted to creating a miserly Jetta. It has also made an effort to manufacture the fastest hybrid in the segment it operates. If the sport mode provided in the transmission is selected and the driver presses the accelerator down, the Jetta has been empowered to reach a speed of 60mph from a stationary position within nine seconds, as per claims of the auto maker.

This seems to be feasible as the kerb weight of the vehicle has been restricted to below 3310 pounds.

Special Touches given to the Hybrid:

If one needs to judge the external looks of the hybrid Volkswagen Jetta vis-à-vis its siblings, it is seen that the car has been provided with some aero modifications including its all-new air dam at the front, a spoiler and the rear diffuser. All these have combined to achieve a claimed drag reduction of 10%. The car has been provided with 15-inch wheels and its grille, trunk lid and front fenders are dotted by the hybrid badges. The interior of this hybrid Jetta is more or less in conventional lines. Its tachometer has been replaced by the ‘power meter’ and its instrument cluster has been provided with a multi functional display that displays special information pertaining to the hybrid.

The latest exhaust system is expected to keep noise levels in the cabin down. It has also been provided with acoustic glass on its windshield and its side windows are thicker.

When this car is put on sale by 2012 year end, it is expected to be offered in three trims. The standardized features that are expected to be provided to all the variants include Bluetooth, satellite radio and LED taillights. Some optional equipment that could be provided includes xenon headlamps, power seats for drivers, navigational tools and rear camera.

Though VW has not yet announced prices of this hybrid, it is expected to be in the range of $25,000 to $30,000.
