2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid

For the 2013 model year, Volkswagen will be introducing its first hybrid to be available in Canada: the Jetta Hybrid. This Jetta will be similar to the regular Jetta, but with some distinctive differences. These include a new powertrain, some unique exterior accents, and an improved fuel economy.

Now that Volkswagen has expanded their list of gas-alternative vehicles, buyers can choose not only from a diesel, but a hybrid as well.

Being a hybrid, the Jetta Hybrid has two engines. One is a turbocharged 1.4L 4-cylinder gas engine, and adjacent to it is a 20 kW electric motor. The gas engine generates 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, while the electric motor generates 20 hp, making a combined horsepower of 170. The battery pack powering the electric motor is made up of 60 cells of lithium-ion batteries. It also comes with its own management system, which monitors performance, safety, and overall condition of the batteries.

When not in use or when involved in a collision, the batteries disconnect from the electric motor. The electric motor can travel at 70 km/h for up to 2 km on pure electric power, and when driving in regular mode, it will use the energy generated from braking to create power for the batteries.

Volkswagen wanted to create a hybrid that was different from the others; one that was fun to drive. One way Volkswagen is trying to achieve their goal is using a more inspiring transmission. Most hybrid manufacturers now use CVT transmissions, which help to maximum fuel economy. Volkswagen went a different route and decided to offer the Jetta Hybrid with one transmission option; a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic with Sport mode (manual shift mode).

Using conventional gears instead of belts, the Jetta Hybrid remains highly fuel efficient while still having the ability to shift gears manually, giving a more inspired drive.

Being a hybrid, fuel economy is one of the most important details of the car. The Jetta Hybrid has a combined fuel economy of an estimated 45 mpg or 5.2L/100 km. One way the Jetta Hybrid improves fuel economy is by utilizing both its gas and electric motors and the decoupling clutch to disengage the gas engine when idling while the electric motor continues to run the electronics on board.

There is also a Multifunction Display placed in the instrument cluster, which displays the driving mode; general (ready), battery regeneration (charge), Eco, boost, and E-mode (pure electric). The Jetta Hybrid will also display the driving economy in bar diagram form on the audio system screen.

The Jetta Hybrid will be very similar to the standard Jetta, but it will have its own distinctive qualities. The hybrid will come with LED accents on the headlamps, a different grille, different rims made of lightweight alloy and low rolling resistant all-season tires. The hybrid will also come with a new front airdam, a rear diffuser, a rear spoiler to increase aerodynamics, and Hybrid badges on the front and rear.

As for safety, the Jetta Hybrid comes equipped with standard electronic stability control, ABS, and driver and front passenger, front side, and front and rear side curtain airbags.

All in all, the 2013 Jetta Hybrid looks to be a fun to drive hybrid, having parts that normal hybrids wouldn’t dare have, yet still is able to achieve 45 mpg. A full list of standard features for the Jetta Hybrid will be released closer to its launch at the end of 2012.
