Volkswagen Golf R32 — Car Review

Sure there might be faster boy racers out there, but they lack the refinement and sophistication of the R32. And there might be more luxurious hatchbacks and coupes from some rival Europeans, but they don’t have the performance and race-bred technology of the R32.

Highlights

‘R’ is Volkswagen’s high performance label and the moniker under which former sports car racer Kris Nissen runs Volkswagen Racing, the company’s motorsport operation which has an RD and administration facility within the massive Head Office in Wolfsburg and workshops just down the road in Hanover.

Nissen masterminded Volkswagen Racing’s victory in this year’s Dakar rally.

For a while the Golf R32 was the only ‘R’ derivative in Australia, but now you can also get an R36 Passat and an R50 Touareg.

As one Volkswagen expert put it: “ ‘R’ models are everything Volkswagen does, done all at once”.

Under The Hood

Car Showroom spent a week driving a five-door R32 with the DSG twin-clutch six-speed automatic transmission. The glorious 3.2-litre V6 engine delivers 184kW/320Nm and drives all four wheels via Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

Zero to 100 km/h takes just 6.2 seconds.

As tested, this R32 model retails for $59,490. Entry to the Golf R32 club is the three-door six-speed manual which has a price tag of $55,490.

Volkswagen’s technological competence is breathtaking and in our minds, two things really set the Golf R32 apart from rival hot hatches.

Firstly the latest version of Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system which is governed by a Haldex wet plate coupling. Unlike rival mechanical Torsen differentials, the Haldex coupling can be controlled electronically and this enables Volkswagen to harmonise that system with the ABS anti-lock brakes, Traction Control, Electronic Differential Lock and Electronic Stabilisation Program. It’s an all-encompassing control system much like those used in Formula One until the end of 2007.

Secondly the engine turn the key and it instantly idles (just like an F1 car there is no ‘start-up/fire-up’it just runs). And with those twin central-mounted tailpipes it sounds just awesome.

Suspension is a MacPherson strut front end and a highly-engineered four-link rear designed specifically for all-wheel-drive ride/handling.

The Interior

A real standout for the Golf R32 — Recaro seats are leather offerings and they’re just fine. There’s a race-bred ‘D’-shaped leather-bound steering wheel (adjustable for rake and reach) and alloy pedals which all combine to deliver a super driving positions. Naturally there’s lots of R32 badges and carbon-fibre look trim material.


The paddle-shifters for manual gear changes are beautifully-finished small aluminium numbers which are a work of art.

Otherwise it’s the Golf as we know it cruise control on the left stalk and very convenient and it must be said a somewhat mundane 10-speaker sound system.

Rain sensing wipers and the coming/leaving home function for the headlights are nice touches.

Exterior/Styling

With its 20-spoke Zolder 18-inch alloy wheels, lowered ride height and subtle hatchlid spoiler, the Golf R32 doesn’t shout “Boy Racer, Book Me Now” this is a sophisticated European hot hatch and it’s styling is beautifully crafted. Sure there’s the odd bit of chrome on the grille and an R badge here or there but subtlety is what Volkswagen is on about with the R rangeleave the loud/flashy stuff to someone else.

On The Road

This is the benchmark, where the bar is at. It’s a threesome high-tech, high-performance and refinement all geared for drivers to enjoy.

Grip levels and turn-in are staggering, as are acceleration and braking all accompanied by the symphony of the V6 singing through those twin tailpipes.

We actually did some standing start runs with the windows down just so we could hear the V6 as it worked through the gear changes in split seconds thanks to the DSG ‘box doing its thing.

Challenges

The world’s hottest hot hatch deserves to have satellite navigation as standard not a $2,500 option. The same system as the Volkswagen Tiguan with the guidance system reversing camera would be perfect thanks.

The standard Golf is not overly spacious in the rear seat and there are no miracle cures with the R32 variant. Children under six or seven are fine anyone else wouldn’t appreciate a long journey back there.

Verdict

On performance, technology, styling and driving dynamics the Golf R32 is the world’s hottest hatch. It wins too in another area not normally associated with Volkswagen value-for-money. With the Car Showroom juniors aged only four and five, we’d have an R32 in our garage right now, today, any colourleave it right there thank-you very much!!

The tree-hugging, greenie neighbours would not be pleased, but hey we’d be having fun every time we started that wonderful V6.

The Competition

This is where the R32 is a ‘segment-straddler’ to use car-selling jargon. Sure for out and out fire-breathing performance, you would look at the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo but it lacks the Golf’s refinement, quality feel and the interior is a long way behind the R32 for quality of materials and the rest. And to compare specifications on a level playing field you would need to go to the TC-SST EVO which carries a RRP of $72,190 against the R32’s $59,490.

Same with the Impreza STI hatch which is a bit better on the dollars and cents at $64,990.

We would venture to suggest the R32 actually gives the BMW M3 coupe a run for its money and we look forward to testing an M3 soon.
