Volkswagen Unveils the XL1 Wonder Car

After more than ten years since the introduction of the first sketches, the wonder car from Volkswagen (which consumes a tiny quantity of fuel to function) is as ready as it can be for production.

The folks from Volkswagen officially presented the new XL1, a machine that has a record consumption of just 0.9 liters per 100 km, below the level of any hybrid car on the market, thanks to a mixed propulsion system, which uses an internal combustion engine and an electric one.

The new car XL1 prototype is the same name previously presented by Volkswagen, but not benefiting from the usage of electric propulsion. The series variant will be produced at the plant in Osnabruck, Germany, and Volkswagen says that production methods will be manufacturing. Volkswagen said it would produce in the first instance about 50 copies with the rest to be assembled only after an order is placed.

In addition to consumption record, the XL1 manages another record, which is the most aerodynamic car. Its profile is quite strange, having an elongated shape, like that of an airplane. Also, the covered rear wheels increase the aerodynamics.

The XL1 technical data describe a vehicle that is only 795 kg, with a center of gravity of 11, 5 cm and an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.189. According to Volkswagen, these figures are the ones enabling the XL1’s running at 100 km/h using only 8.4 hp (6.2 kW), which is a record in the automotive industry. In electric only propulsion, the VW model consumes less than 0.1 kW in order to travel 1 km.

Autonomy with the battery charged is 50 km.

The combustion engine is a tiny 2-cylinder TDI, which generates a maximum power of 48 horses, while the electric motor provides 27 hp. The two are connected via a 7-speed DSG transmission and the battery is Li-ion. CO2 emissions stand at just 21g/km, which is admittedly a lot less than any performance hybrid out there (Toyota Prius plug-in emits 49g/km). It is true that we are talking about a car with a reduced transport capacity and limited performance (12.7 seconds acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h).

The Volkswagen XL1 will reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h before the limiter wil intervene and limit its momentum.

The other technical parameters of the machine are its length of 3.88 meters, width of 1.66 meters and height of 1.15 meters. In comparison with other models made by the Volkswagen manufacturer, the Polo has 30 cm more height, at almost equal length, and the Porsche Boxster is higher by 13 cm.

In the full-electric mode, the Volkswagen XL1 can travel a maximum distance of 50 kilometers, but if you use it with the traditional engine, you can travel a little over 1,100 kilometers. Perhaps your current diesel has a range that would close, under optimal conditions, to 1,000 kilometers, but most likely that is not possible by filling the tank with just ten liters of fuel; that is this car’s tank capacity, by the way.

The selling price will not be very small because the body carbon fiber, ceramic brakes and anti-roll bars of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) materials are not the cheapest.
