Volkswagen up. First drive

The way is up! Or that’s what Volkswagen is city car buyers will when they consider the new car rivals such as the Fiat 500 and i10.

Originally shown as a in 2007, the up! is definitely a car of its time, Volkswagen predicting sales of cars like this one by 20 per cent over the next years, as people embrace cars that can carry people and are fun to drive.

So, with of this new dinky motor in spring 2012, does it up to its impressive billing of being a Volkswagen? I headed to Rome for the launch to find out.

the forgettable Fox, the new baby gets off to a great start the crisp exterior styling.

The work of both Walter de and Klaus Bischoff, it remains to the concept with its big wheels even on the entry-level Take up! which are moved to the four of the car, the big wheelarches, the short and the lower than you’d roof height.

For me, the neatest of the up!’s design are the strong, 3D round the side windows are steeply upswept at the back and the rear tailgate, which claim is inspired by modern TVs.

The up! is also one of the few cars to a face, which I think to its cheekyness. With the circular of the headlights looking like the Volkswagen badge the nose and the bumper treatment almost like a smiley face.

inside and despite the up!’s dimensions, the interior is suprisingly with a big car feel. Quality is up to Volkswagen standards and the simple design is elegant.

I tried three different of the up! and the gloss white and black trim of the special edition up! and up! white give a different feel to the car. Though the cream finish of the Move up! was the simple and honest.

Some of the such as the rev counter might be than the Volkswagen norm, but are beautifully detailed and easy to The switchgear placement is also

Despite me in the front of the up. I’m sure would be enough rear for a couple of adults to travel in comfort. This is down to the wheelbase.

There’s also a reasonably 251 litre boot, which is 66 bigger than a Fiat 500 and a clever false floor to valubles out of sight.

Take up. up. High up! and limited edition up! and up! white will be available prices starting from

Standard equipment on all models front and side airbags, CD with aux-in and rear points.

Options are made up of packs; these include a assistance pack (£400) has the clever City Emergency system, that will the car automatically at speeds of up to 18mph, it senses you’re unable to do it

Another key option is the Maps touch screen navigation, is basically a portable Navigon and MP3 player (a £300 cost which fits to the top of the dashboard.

The up! is by a choice of new 59bhp or 74bhp 1.0-litre engines. I got the chance to both and was impressed by the refinement and of these three-pot engines.

As they have low emissions and sip with the 59bhp version 105g/km CO2 figures and a 62.8 fuel consumption figure. The powerful 74bhp version has CO2 figures and a 60.1 combined consumption figure.

Not green for you? A Bluemotion version be available at a later date, expected 97g/km emissions and a fuel consumption figure.

The problem I have with engines, is that because of the gearing, they are lethargic To get the best out of both engines, you to use the gears and rev them a lot.

Like the engine, the ride is refined and composed. Only bumps seeming to upset the Volkswagen. However, despite the ride, body roll is well in check, the steering enough and light enough for work and the brakes are strong.

So is the best small car on sale? as there’s much to like the neat styling, quality and the fact that all versions are to drive. However, a lot of key equipment is in the option packs and if you spec too of those it could get expensive.

from the leisurely acceleration, the other feature I wasn’t on was the Maps More touch navigation. The removable Navigon didn’t feel up to the quality of the of the cabin, was difficult to read and to use.

Overall though, with the up. could have created is possibly the most fun and funky car.
