The Volkswagen XL1 concept car is powered by a compact 800 cc TDI diesel engine, comprising two-cylinders and electric motor, producing 74 hp. The TDI engine connects the electric motor and seven-speed direct shift gearbox, which helps transmit power to the rear wheels.

The TDI engine can either work in tandem or independently. The vehicle can run for 35 km on electric power once it is fully charged. The lithium-ion battery can be recharged at a standard household power outlet.

Depending upon the charge left, the battery can take you a few extra miles when if run out of fuel.

An advanced plug-in hybrid drive system and pioneering construction techniques have contributed to making the Volkswagen XL1 concept car the most efficient concept car that I personally am chomping at the bit for it to turn into a production vehicle.


The ultra-sleek concept car weighs only 1,753 pounds or 795 kg and can run at a maximum speed of 99 mph. An extension of the previous 1-Litre car and the L1 concept, the Volkswagen XL1 concept car is made from Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP), with just 23.2% iron or steel.

The carbon fiber body along with CFRP parts and lightweight materials, such as ceramics for brake discs, magnesium for wheels, and aluminum for steering system, dampers, and brake calipers make this Volkswagen XL1 Concept extremely lightweight. Assembled using advanced Resin Transfer Moulding, Volkswagen XL1 Concept Car’s space age exterior layout is unique with a streamlined design and hyper-aerodynamic contour.

Its scissor doors hinging on the A-pillar, gull-wing doors, bucket seats make it more stylish. Unlike the previous versions of tandem seating, its interior layout uses a staggered side-by-side seating arrangement, ensuring that driver and passenger are placed next to each other. Its overall length and width are akin to the Polo and height to Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder.

The VW XL1 can achieve a fuel economy of 0.9 liters every 100 kilometers at a top speed of 158 km/h. The Volkswagen XL1 is the company’s latest innovation in the field of low-emission high-efficiency cars and it can be easily considered as an eco-superstar. Its overall carbon dioxide emission is low, being only 24 grams per kilometer.

This emission figure is better than the best low CO2 models available in the market today, which produce CO2 emissions within a range of 80-100 grams per kilometer.

The VW XL1’s LED lighting assures bright illumination, besides promoting energy conservation. With fully functional controls and door-mounted LCD screens replacing side mirrors and showing video camera images, the Volkswagen XL Concept Car is a blend of comfort and refinement and simple in composure. Its aerodynamic appearance and properties, new headlamps with LED technology, typical radiator grille, electrically controlled air intakes, and fully covered rear wheels enable traveling long distances.

Production

This hybrid car will no longer remain a concept and hit the production lines by 2013. Though the first production batch of Volkswagen XL Concept Car will produce 100 affordably priced vehicles, it would be initially available in Germany, followed by the United States and China.
